Google executive in Brazil faces arrest over elections law

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 08:37 PM PDT

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - An elections court in Brazil has ordered the arrest of Google's most senior executive in the country after the company failed to take down YouTube videos attacking a local mayoral candidate.

Google is appealing the order, which follows a similar decision by another Brazilian election judge. In that case, a judge found another senior executive responsible for violating local election law. That decision was overturned last week.

The legal challenges underline broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, such as an anti-Islam video that sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.

A spokesman for the regional elections court in Brazil's Mato Grosso do Sul state said that a judge had ordered the arrest of Fabio José Silva Coelho, Google's top executive in Brazil, unless the videos attacking a mayoral candidate were removed.

"Google is appealing the decision that ordered the removal of the video on YouTube because, as a platform, Google is not responsible for the content posted to its site," the company said through a spokesman in Brazil.

The arrest warrants for Google executives follow the filing of criminal charges in March against Chevron Corp and Transocean Ltd and 17 of their employees and executives, in a case that showed the Brazilian justice systems' willingness to target senior executives for alleged misdeeds.

Public prosecutors, who have almost total independence to bring cases in Brazil, are seeking jail terms of up to 31 years in the case, which resulted from a November oil spill. Chevron is the No. 2 U.S. oil company. Transocean is the world's largest offshore oil-drill-rig operator.

"WHAT AN IDIOT"

In Google's case, judges have held executives responsible for resisting the removal of online videos in violation of a stringent 1965 Electoral Code. The law bans campaign ads that "offend the dignity or decorum" of a candidate.

Earlier this month an electoral court in the state of Paraiba ordered the arrest of another senior Google executive, Edmundo Luiz Pinto Balthazar, after the company refused to take down a YouTube video mocking a mayoral candidate there.

The video clip loaded by the user "Paraiba Humor" seized on a verbal slip by a candidate in a montage remarking, "What an idiot -- give him an F!"

Within days another judge overturned the order to arrest Balthazar, writing that "Google is not the intellectual author of the video, it did not post the file, and for that reason it cannot be punished for its propagation."

The company also defended users' political rights in a statement at the time.

"Google believes that voters have a right to use the Internet to freely express their opinions about candidates for political office, as a form of full exercise of democracy, especially during electoral campaigns," the company wrote.

Google faces frequent legal scrutiny over the limits of users' expression in Brazil, where it opened an office in 2005.

The legal challenges underline broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, such as an anti-Islam video that sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.

ANTI-ISLAM VIDEO BAN

Also on Tuesday, A Brazilian court banned an online anti-Islam movie that has spawned violent protests across the Muslim world and gave YouTube 10 days to pull the film's trailer from its website.

The decision was by state court in Sao Paulo, home to a large Middle Eastern immigrant community and came hours after Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff criticized "Islamophobia" in Western countries in a speech at the United Nations.

The lawsuit against the controversial film was brought by a Brazilian Muslim group, the National Islamic Union. The judge said the film was offensive and a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion.

In his decision, Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda said the case juxtaposed freedom of expression and the need to protect individuals or groups of people from action that might incite religious discrimination.

Fifteen people were killed in Pakistan during demonstrations over the video on Friday.

Over the years, Google has received repeated requests from Brazilian authorities to reveal the identity of bloggers and users of its social networking site Orkut, whose posts violated local libel and anti-racism laws.

In the second half of last year, Google removed four Orkut profiles after an electoral court order, the company said on a portion of its website called the Transparency Report.

Brazil court orders YouTube to remove anti-Islam film

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 08:27 PM PDT

BRASILIA (Reuters) - A Brazilian court on Tuesday banned an online anti-Islam movie that spawned violent protests across the Muslim world and gave YouTube 10 days to pull the film's trailer from its website.

The decision by a state court in Sao Paulo, home to a large Middle Eastern immigrant community, came hours after Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff criticized "Islamophobia" in Western countries in a speech at the United Nations.

The lawsuit against the controversial film was brought by a Brazilian Muslim group, the National Islamic Union, against YouTube owner Google Inc for posting on the Internet a film it said was offensive and a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion.

In his decision, Judge Gilson Delgado Miranda said the case juxtaposed freedom of expression and the need to protect individuals or groups of people from action that might incite religious discrimination.

Miranda concluded that banning something illegal should not "offend" freedom of thought and expression, according to the ruling posted online by Estado de S. Paulo newspaper.

It wasn't the only Brazilian court ruling against Google on Tuesday. Earlier, an elections court ordered the arrest of Google's most senior executive in Brazil after the company failed to take down YouTube videos attacking a local mayoral candidate.

The legal challenges underline broader questions about Google's responsibility for content uploaded by third parties to its websites, such as the anti-Islam video, which mocked the Prophet Mohammad and sparked a wave of protests and violence in the Muslim world.

Fifteen people were killed in Pakistan during demonstrations over the video on Friday. People involved in the film, an amateurish 13-minute clip of which was posted on YouTube, have said it was made by a 55-year-old California man, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula.

Bundle of joy

Laugh through the challenges of parenthood in Up All Night.

WE all know parenting can be tedious but shows about it don't have to be.

For far too long, television has been dominated by portrayals of frazzled parents trying to juggle between climbing the corporate ladder and raising children. The scene is not unfamiliar: with their hair tousled and their shirts in disarray, the busy parents fish out their briefcases buried under a pile of diapers before driving their tiny tots to a nearby nursery, then heading to work, all the while, thinking, "This isn't what I signed up for."

Remember Tom and Lynette Scavo from Desperate Housewives? Throughout all eight season of the series, this frustrated husband-and-wife team (I can still hear Lynette's perpetual sigh in my mind) had to constantly clean up after their four children when they're not busy with the rat race. Just when they thought their children were all grown up and they could finally kick up their heels, Lynette learned she was pregnant with her fifth child in season five.

While I believe many viewers can identify with the couple and draw inspiration from their struggles (God bless the Scavos), I'm tired of this depressing, woe-is-me portrayal of parenthood on the small screen. Don't get me wrong, parenting is a tough job but the depiction, though real and powerful, is sappy, overstated and one-dimensional.

Thankfully, television's newest parents, Chris (Will Arnett) and Reagan Brinkley (Christina Applegate), are changing all that in the sitcom, Up All Night.

Hilarious script

In an interview with Forbes magazine, the show's creator Emily Spivey revealed that she came up with Up All Night when she had her child while working as a writer for the live comedy show, Saturday Night Live.

Like Spivey, the Brinkleys had just delivered their firstborn Amy. As with any other first-time parents, the couple is getting used to those incessant crying, middle-of-the-night diaper changes and the typical lifestyle modifications that come with parenthood. This premise may not be exceptionally inventive but it does set the show for some great laughs.

What's more, unlike many of today's sitcoms that thrive on lines jam-packed with puns, the show's humour is honest and unpretentious. Viewers can get a kick from watching a scene in which the couple fawns over a pile of baby socks or when they describe the adorable Amy with a bunch of (muted) expletives. But it was during a scene from a flashback episode when Reagan delivers her baby that takes the cake. She describes the ordeal as, "It's like hair coming out of hair."

Real-life parenting issues

Don't let the series' light-hearted approach fool you into thinking it doesn't address real-life issues that parents go through. Reagan is plagued by a worry that all working mothers face: what if Amy's development is delayed because she didn't spend enough time nurturing her daughter? In an episode, after learning that a child around Amy's age has started to crawl, Reagan got down on all fours, trying to get her daughter to improve her motor skills.

Besides that, new parents can relate to Chris and Reagan's desire to still want to be "cool" and party alongside the twentysomethings. For instance, they went to extraordinary lengths to impress their hip and happening neighbours who just moved in (with disastrous results).

Then, there's the age-old struggle of how to maintain the spark between married couples. This has Chris donning more risqué clothing (okay, don't get any ideas, they are just tight-fitting tee and pants) or Reagan planning a romantic night out in town.

The great thing about the show is its ability to bring up these issues without making them sound like some serious third world problem. But that's not to say that the show makes light of them, it simply finds a more entertaining way to go about it.

A switch in gender roles

It's refreshing to see Chris taking on the stay-at-home husband role, given that househusbands are possibly the most underrepresented group in the media.

In case you're wondering, no, Chris didn't assume the role by default because he was a slacker. In fact, he was almost named partner in a law firm but decided to give up his lucrative position to become a full-time father.

So, while Reagan is out pursuing her high-flying career as a talk show producer, he starts off as a clueless father pushing the cart around a supermarket looking for "regular cheese" but all he found was "fancy cheese". It's endearing to see him calling up his wife to ask where to find the cheese, and having done that, still bring home a block of "fancy cheese".

Instead of playing up this "clueless father" angle throughout the series, Chris doesn't stay clueless for long. By episode five, the father successfully conducts a playgroup while the instructor is attending to a call. In another episode, he even offers relationship advice to Reagan, saying, "Maintaining the romance in a relationship is very, very important, or at least that's what Gwyneth (Paltrow) says, as tweeted from the London Spice Market."

What would be interesting to see in the future is how Chris deals with those who respond negatively to his unorthodox choice of being a full-time father. In doing so, the show helps to bring awareness to the stigma and perhaps discrimination that comes with being a househusband.

Sharp to win banks’ nod for US$2.7bil bailout

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 06:32 PM PDT

TOKYO: Cash-strapped Sharp Corp will win approval from its banks as early as tomorrow to secure as much as 210 billion yen (US$2.7bil) in fresh loans with a plan that commits the loss-making company to return to profit, a source at one of its main lenders said yesterday.

Sharp has already submitted its proposed revival plan which must outline how it would make a profit in the six months starting Oct 1 and beyond, the source told Reuters on condition he isn't identified.

The banks may yet seek revisions to that plan before agreeing to new lending, but ultimately are expected to approve new loans that Sharp needs to stay in business because by refusing to do so they risk having to write off Sharp's existing debts.

Sharp has to repay as much as 360 billion yen of short-term commercial paper loans and needs to secure financing from lenders led by Mizuho Financial Group and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.

The maker of Aquos TVs has already mortgaged nearly all of its domestic offices and factories, including one that makes screens for Apple Inc's iPhone 5, to secure up to 150 billion yen of loans.

Sharp is predicting a net income of 15 billion yen in the 12 months to March 31, 2014, compared with a net loss of 250 billion yen projected for this year, Kyodo news reported on Tuesday.

Sharp and the two banks declined to comment.

The company's shares ended up 0.5% yesterday against the broader market's 0.25% rise. Sharp's shares are down nearly 70% so far this year, the biggest loser among constituents of the benchmark Nikkei index, which is up 7.5% .

Sharp, which has already committed to trimming 5,000 people worldwide, or about a tenth of its workforce, will raise job losses to around 11,000 while consolidating its domestic sales network and shrinking its solar panel business in a fresh bid to save money, Kyodo said.

The Japanese company earlier had said it was considering selling two of its overseas assembly plants, one in Mexico and one in China to fellow Apple Inc supplier Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.

The remaining two could be shuttered or also sold, analysts say. The four factories employ a total of 6,800 people. Other planned assets sales include its Tokyo headquarters.

As it scrambles for cost savings, the company is also asking its remaining workers to accept pay cuts of as much as a tenth of their salary. Reuters

Esther fails to strike home

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 06:12 PM PDT

PETALING JAYA: National bowler Esther Cheah ended her campaign in the inaugural World Singles Championships at the Galactica Bowling Centre in Limassol, Cyprus, with a bronze medal after being edged by eventual gold medallist Kelly Kulick of the United States in the semi-finals.

Esther, the only national bowler left in the mix after the others fell by the wayside, lost 212-207 to Kulick.

Her failure to connect strikes in the opening frames led to her downfall as she needed a strike in the final frame to win.

However, a stubborn pin refused to fall for Esther while Kulick struck home for the win.

"It was a close one all the way with Kulick. I think the spare in the third frame cost me a bit because I could have gone further ahead," said Esther from Limassol yesterday.

"But I never gave up until the last frame, when both of us needed to strike home to win. I could have won if I didn't miss in the last frame."

Kulick went on to win the title after defeating Diana Zavjalova of Latvia 228-226 in the final.

In the second elimination round earlier, Esther overcame Venezuela's Karen Marcano 3-1 to book a spot in the quarter-final against Shannon O'Keefe of the US.

Esther took the fight to her American opponent to win 3-2.

Malaysia's challenge in the men's competition ended in the quarter-finals when Mohd Syafiq Ridhwan Abdul Malek lost to Colombia's Andres Gomez 1-3.

Ying Ting and Clement win gold in World Junior Wushu Championships

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 07:31 PM PDT

SEPANG: Malacca already boasts one of the best wushu exponents in the world in Chai Fong Ying, who has won the world title three times and the Asian Games gold medal twice.

Should the taiji exponent decide to retire, Malacca need not fret as Loh Ying Ting will be ready to step up.

Ying Ting and Clement Thian flew the flag high with golden acts as the Malaysian wushu team returned with a 2-6-5 medal haul from the World Junior Wushu Championships, which concluded in Macau on Monday.

The 15-year-old Ying Ting took gold in the girls' Group B changquan (barehands northern style) while 13-year-old Clement of Sarawak came out tops in the boys' Group B nanquan (barehands southern style) events.

Ying Ting continued Malaysia's proud tradition of winning at the world and Asian juniors. She was a double gold medallist for Malaysia at the Asian junior championships in Singapore last year in gunshu (stick) and daoshu (broadsword).

Ying Ting was delighted to have pulled it off in her second attempt at the world junior meet.

There are three age groups in the world junior meet – A (16-18), B (13-15) and C (10-12). Each exponent is allowed to compete in three disciplines.

"I got one silver in daoshu and one bronze in gunshu at the last world junior meet two years ago. I finished fourth in daoshu and gunshu this time but I got a gold in changquan, which is perfect as I have to move up to the A category if I go for the next championships," said Ying Ting, who credited her win to the dedicated coaching of Chinese coach Mao Yaji and former SEA Games champion Lim Yew Fai.

"I was selected for the back-up squad to train full-time at Bukit Jalil early this year and I've improved a lot. Fong Ying is an inspiration to everyone who follows wushu and I hope to be able to match her achievements one day, although our events are not the same," said Ying Ting.

Clement, who is not from the Bukit Jalil programme, was a double medal winner as he also bagged a silver in nandao (swordplay).

"I did not expect to win the gold as this was my first world junior championships," said Clement, who is from Kuching.

Yew Fai, who has been coaching the juniors for the last two years, was happy with the overall performance, considering half the 12-member squad were first-timers.

"We hauled in 2-1-2 at the last world junior meet in Singapore. We got more silvers and bronzes although there is only one exponent who is under our back-up programme at Bukit Jalil. This shows our juniors have the potential to go up although the standards have risen," he said.

Rise of the young brigade pushes Nicol to raise her game

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 04:34 PM PDT

LAST week was not the best for Malaysian athletes as far as results were concerned.

In badminton, the senior shuttlers were all wiped out at the semi-final stage in the China Masters while the youngsters also failed to achieve success at the Malaysian Junior Open.

In motor racing, Moto3 rider Mohd Zulfahmi Khairudin got off to a bad start at the San Marino GP and could only manage 11th placing.

But the biggest shock of all was when squash queen Nicol David suffered an uncharacteristic defeat in the final of the Malaysian Open last Saturday.

The only silver lining of a dismal week was national No. 2 Low Wee Wern's amazing run to the semi-finals, which saw her beat two of the top five players in the world.

But it's still early days in Wee Wern's career. Although it was great to see her do so well, especially in the glass court in front of so many home fans, she still has a lot of work ahead of her.

Wee Wern has to keep her head down and work harder to ensure that her semi-final achievement is not a fluke.

There will surely be higher expectations and more pressure on her now, but this is something she will have to learn to deal with as a top player.

But Wee Wern is not the only youngster who stole the limelight at The Curve last week.

Egypt's 23-year-old Raneem El Weleily too made heads turn when she handed Nicol her first loss for this year. The defeat also came at a time when Nicol is pushing hard for squash to be included in the 2020 Olympics.

Weleily was simply dominant against Nicol, brutally chopping the Malaysian down and making her run around in circles.

Nicol even lost her composure on court and resorted to going for the early kills in the fourth set. Her move backfired and the world No. 2 Weleily needed no second invitation to send the six-time world champion packing.

So, are we witnessing the changing of the guards here?

Besides Weleily, there is also two-time world junior champion Nour El Sherbini, who is only just 16 and already ranked No. 7 in the world.

Another 23-year-old, Hong Kong's Annie Au has also been making great strides since last year and is now ranked sixth in the world.

Annie arrived at the Malaysian Open looking fitter and sharper, especially with her lobs from back court, and came close to upsetting Nicol in the quarter-finals.

"Just a little bit more," was what the cheerful left-hander said after the match.

Annie has a point there. All the youngsters seem to have raised their game and questions will be asked of Nicol's ability to compete at such a high level in eight years' time – presuming squash makes it to the Olympics then.

To be fair to Nicol, despite looking off her usual pace from the first round, she still has most of her weapons intact – her drops, drives and ability to read the game and anticipation.

At 29 years old, some may argue that she is getting on a little for a sport that is so physical and aggressive.

But just take a look at some 30-somethings – like the Grinham sisters of Rachael and Natalie as well as Madeline Perry. They are still formidable opponents despite their age.

Despite her loss, Nicol seems bent on carrying on playing until 2020.

She admitted that there are a lot of areas for her to improve on and even vowed to come back stronger.

So Malaysians need not worry about Nicol's form. The loss only proved that she is only human afterall.

If anything, the emergence of young players like Weleily, Sherbini, Annie and perhaps even Wee Wern will only push Nicol to up her game so that she can still be competitive come the Olympics in 2020.

Campus polls: Pro-Aspirasi win big in 7 universities (Update)

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 07:42 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The pro-establishment Pro-Aspirasi group has won big in campus elections held in eight of the 15 public universities on Tuesday.

The universities are Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM); Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM); Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM); Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas); Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI); Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP); Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT; and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM).

A technical glitch invalidated results in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and this will see the campus election held again next week.

Two student groups - Pro-Aspirasi, widely held to be pro-government, and Pro-Mahasiswa, seen as anti-establishment, - went for 454 seats in the 15 public universities nationwide.

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, however, saw the Pro-Mahasiswa group retain their leadership of the student council when they won 18 out of the 28 seats.

Meanwhile, Pro-Aspirasi had already picked up 150 out of 198 uncontested seats in six universities during the nomination process.

At University Malaya, where all 43 seats were contested, conflicting reports have emerged about who has won.

Pro-Mahasiswa claim they have won 22 seat but Pro-Aspirasi disagree.

Two more seats are tied and another round of voting will be held, most probably on Wednesday, for these two seats.

Penggerak Mahasiswa (UM's Pro-Aspirasi camp) chairman Marwan said that Pro-Mahasiswa had jumped the gun in declaring a win.

"Of the 22 candidates they claim are theirs, two candidates are actually independent. We will leave it to these two candidates to see which side they'll be on," he said.

The UM campus poll results are unofficial, subject to a 24-hour objection period, and a further 24-hour appeal period. The final results will be known on Thursday.

At Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang, Pro-Aspirasi took 40 out of the 47 seats while Pro-Mahasiswa bagged the remaining seven.

However, these are not confirmed as the university has specified sessions for protests and appeals. Official results will be released on Oct 1.

At Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Pro-Aspirasi candidates won 34 out of 36 seats - seven out of the eight general seats and 27 out of 28 faculty seats.

Twenty-two faculty seats were won unopposed by Pro-Aspirasi candidates during nomination day last week.

Two independent candidates each won a general seat and faculty seat.

More than 14,000 students cast their votes and UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, when announcing the result, said voter turnout had been 92%.

At Unimas, all 12 seats went to Pro-Aspirasi candidates. They also won in UPSI (25 out of 29 seats), UMP (22 out of 24), UMT (18 out of 20) UPNM (all 14 seats).

At International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), its deputy rector (Student Affairs) Datuk Dr Mizan Hitam said Tuesday the election results could not be formally announced due to a technical problem during the e-voting process.

"The final tally shows that some votes were not captured due to incomplete encryption process," he said in a statement.

Dr Mizan said that based on feedback from the university's technical committee, a re-election exercise would be conducted upon Senate approval and this was expected to be carried out in a week's time.

As at 12 midnight, results had yet to emerge from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM); Universiti Malaysia Sabah(UMS); Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).

On Thursday, Pro-Aspirasi had won landslide victories in five universities - Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM).

Pro-Aspirasi swept all seats in UiTM (50), UniMAP (31), UTeM (28) and UniSZA (24).

In UTHM, Pro-Aspirasi took 25 of the 27 seats contested.

Hisham: Cops not manipulating crime index

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 04:47 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has dismissed allegations that the police had manipulated the crime index rate by classifying index crime as non-index crime.

He said the statistics clearly showed that the total number of cases classified under the index crime was much higher than that for non-index crime.

Hishammuddin said this in a written reply to Hee Loy Sian (DAP-Petaling Jaya Selatan) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Hee had wanted to know whether the police had manipulated the crime index and the number of cases classified as index crime and non-index crime between 2007 and 2011.

Index crime consists of, for example, homicide, arson, rape, burglary, theft or basically anything that is physically pursued by the person committing the crime.

Non-index crime consists of non-physical confrontation such as drug possession, drug seizure, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and negligent manslaughter.

Hishammuddin said that between January and August this year, 108,886 crimes were reported, with 101,313 of them being index crime and 7,573 non-index crime.

"A total of 229,997 crimes were reported last year, 252,844 in 2010, 271,831 in 2009, 271,004 in 2008 and 252,324 in 2007," he said. - Bernama

Four immigration officers jailed for taking bribes to let Indonesians in

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 04:32 AM PDT

SHAH ALAM: Four immigration officers were found guilty by a Sessions Court here on Tuesday for taking bribes in exchange for allowing easy entry for Indonesian nationals into the country two years ago.

Md Shahrizal Che Dan - convicted of 31 bribery counts totaling RM51,760 - paid the heaviest price of the lot when he was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM361,400.

The court ordered Md Shahrizal, 27, to serve additional 34 years and six months imprisonment if he failed to pay up.

His colleague Mohamad Izuwansyah Samsuri, 26, was sentenced to 12 years in jail and fined RM261,950, in default 25 years and six months in jail.

Mohamad Izuwansyah was found guilty of 25 bribery counts involving RM31,690.

Two other officers Nor Shahazlina Sulaiman and Mohammad Huzzail Ahmad were each sentenced to three years in jail and fined RM14,500 (in default, one-year jail) and two years in jail and fined RM10,000 (in default, six-months jail) respectively.

Nor Shahazlina, 26, and Mohammad Huzzail, 32, were found guilty of a charge each.

They committed the offences at a house in Taman Palm Grove, a petrol station, and several Public Bank, Maybank and CIMB Bank branches around Klang between April 20 and Sept 25, 2010.

All were charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.

Judge Asmadi Hussin, in his ruling, said the defence failed to raise reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case.

DPP Nik Haslinie Hashim asked the court to mete out a heavy deterrent sentence.

"The public interest is far more important than the personal interest of the four accused. The country (at this time) is already facing an influx of foreign immigrants. They (as Immigration officers) were supposed to carry out their job honestly and responsibly," she said.

The court allowed a stay of execution on the jail term but ordered the fines be paid.

Lawyers representing the four accused were Aminuddin Mohd Ramli, Amir Khusyairi Mohamad Tanusi and Mohamad Fozi Md Zain.

Always something to share at Readings@Seksan

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 06:54 AM PDT

THERE is nothing extraordinary about the house if you look at it from the side of the road. At least, there is nothing from the outside that hints at what happens every month within its four walls.

The gallery on the ground floor of landscape architect Ng Seksan's office is converted into a creative space each month for like minded-people to gather and talk about all things literary.

Founded in 2005 by author-actress Bernice Chauly (who now runs its sister event, Ceritaku@NoBlackTie) and creative writing teacher and writer Sharon Bakar, Readings@Seksan has become KL's longest-running live literature event.

Seven years down the road, more than 400 writers have been featured, and there is still something new to be had at each gathering of Readings, thanks to the growing interest in local writing, and lots of hard work behind the scenes.

"The aim of both Ceritaku and Readings is to encourage writers by giving them a platform for them to read their work and socialise. This is particularly important because writing is a very solitary occupation and it's helpful for writers to have the chance to test works in progress on a live audience," says Sharon.

The events give authors an opportunity to promote their books, and for everyone to network.

Six writers are given about 15 minutes each to read from their works, and there is the occasional music performance thrown in for good measure.

"There is always a mixture of the established and the newbie, fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose, published and not-yet-published, in Malay and English.

"There is a real sense of community created by these gatherings, and I love the way that everyone is so supportive of the work of others. One of the 'rules' of the gathering is that no one, no matter how famous or critically acclaimed, is allowed to be the 'star'. Everyone gets the same billing and the same amount of time," she explains.

Usually, around 50 people turn up for each Readings event, although the head count once exceeded 100 at a session where Awang Goneng, author of Growing Up In Trengganu, read.

The next Readings gathering this Saturday will feature Uthaya Sankar S.B. (who will be reading from his new novel, Pancayat: Special Edition), Elizabeth Marshall (who will present a "funny whimsical pantun" and a ghazal) and Adi Wafi and Mosyuk Borhan (they have a newly-launched collection of poetry and short stories entitled RahsiaDuaPria).

Debra Paul-Burgess from Trinidad and Tobago will also be reading, and classical guitarist Az Samad will be performing with poet Davina Goh as well.

Although Sharon strives for some sort of balance in the programme (in terms of content and the reader's background) so that there is something for everyone in the audience, she is a firm believer in not trying to confine creativity.

"They have complete freedom to express themselves. Some very brave pieces have been read by writers prepared to open up to the audience about their deepest held beliefs and fears. That is what writing is all about: a good writer helps all of us grow in understanding," she says. – Rouwen Lin

> The next Readings will be held on Sept 29, 3.30pm, at Seksan Gallery (67, Jalan Tempinis 1, Lucky Garden, Bangsar, KL). For more information, check out Readings on Facebook (facebook.com/groups/12482 985713/), visit Sharon's blog (thebooka holic.blogspot.com) or email her at sharon bakar@yahoo.com.

Pathman Senathirajah's marketing for morons

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 06:51 AM PDT

A trainer attempts to clarify the workings of a business that has a 'bad reputation'.

PATHMAN Senathirajah stumbled upon network marketing when he was just 18. Fresh out of law school, he'd just started work at a law firm in Kuala Lumpur. Senathirajah has always dreamt of being rich and successful and he knew that he wouldn't achieve that – well, not at lightning speed – with a regular nine-to-five desk job.

So, when he was presented with a business opportunity in network marketing, he decided to give it a go. That was some 20 years ago. Presently, the 37-year-old is a trainer and managing director of V Global, a training, network marketing and development company that has its headquarters in KL but has offices in Canada, the Philippines and India.

Senathirajah (right) reckons that he has achieved his dream of being a successful entrepreneur. His business has operations all over the world, from Indonesia to India to the Philippines, and he travels regularly to these markets to train his network marketers. He was recently named "trainer of the year" by Obtainer, an online business and lifestyle magazine.

Then last year, he decided he'd write a book about the industry, which he says has been "misunderstood".

"I was very young when I got into network marketing. I was just 18 and wanted to make money. When I first started out, I realised people had very strong impressions about the industry. Some called me a door-to-door salesman and others just called me a moron for doing it … And then there were some others who saw me as an entrepreneur.

"At the time, I didn't fully understand the business myself. So I did a lot of research and soon realised what a huge industry this is, particularly in the west. In the United States and Europe, network marketing is huge. Last year alone, the industry recorded a US$130bil (RM399bil) turnover and many of these companies are public listed. It's a big business.

"However, here in Malaysia I constantly encounter people who have an issue with network marketing. It doesn't have a very positive reputation. People, often professionals, often say, ' How can I do this? I can't go around selling products.' There is so little knowledge about what it really is and I wanted to do something about it," explains Senathirajah, who hails from Teluk Intan, Perak.

His book, Network Marketing For Morons, defines the nature of network marketing and the role of marketers in the growing industry.

"I wanted to write a book that can be picked up by anyone – a housewife, an accountant, an engineer – to come to some understanding about what the industry is about. It's not a training manual for network marketers," he says.

In the book, he addresses the many misconceptions about the industry and goes on to explain what it is actually about and how it works.

"The first misconception is that it is something for housewives and jobless people to get involved with. Or, the last alternative to make money. It is perceived as a business for desperate people and isn't seen as serious.

"But network marketing is being recognised as a legitimate business and each day, many professionals are getting involved in it. Why? Well, this is the bottom line: a business is something that allows you to make a profit. It's not easy to be successful in business whether you are in KL or New York. It's high-capital and you need a certain skill set to succeed.

"With network marketing, you don't need a qualification, or a lot of capital, or a specific skill set. Most network marketing companies have very systematic training systems to train anyone to become an entrepreneur. And it works … we have net-workers who walk out the door with some serious income. .... we're talking about people who make US$40,000 (RM122,730) a week, or US$1mil (RM3.06mil) a year. Of course there are also people who make US$200 (RM613) a month but that just depends on how hard you want to work," he says.

Senathirajah breaks things down.

"Network marketing companies retail anything from cosmetics to condominiums. Now every company, whether it is Nike or McDonalds, needs to promote its products. Most do this by way of advertising or appointing brand ambassadors. Billions of dollars are spent on advertising campaigns.

"Network marketing companies do away with such campaigns and instead use regular people, the network marketers, to advertise their business by sharing their company's business idea with others. The money for advertising is shared among the millions of network marketers and everyone gets a piece of the pie."

He also addresses the many doubts people have about the industry, such as whether or not network marketing is a legal business, and the difference between network marketing and a pyramid scheme.

"Network marketing is not a get-rich-quick scheme or a get-rich-free scheme. You can't sit at home and let your business grow. It has taken me years of hard work to develop the financial freedom that I longed for as a young boy.

"But the beauty of it is, the hard work is talking to people. If you can talk to people and not feel demotivated by those who reject what you have to say – which will happen many times – you can succeed.

"I just want people to read the book and then come up with their own conclusions about the industry. They don't have to like it or believe in it. But at least they know what it is about," Senathirajah adds.

> Network Marketing For Morons is published by Rythm House Publishing and is available in major bookstores.

Actress Helen Mirren to receive European film award

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 06:09 AM PDT

LONDON: British actress Helen Mirren will receive a lifetime achievement award from the European Film Academy when it hands out its annual movie prizes in December, the organisation said on Tuesday.

The 67-year-old, best known for her Oscar-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in "The Queen", will attend the awards ceremony held on December 1 in Malta.

"It was discovering the immense diversity of European film making that gave me an enduring love and respect for the art form," Mirren said in response to the announcement of the European Achievement in World Cinema honour.

"This award is therefore a very meaningful honour," she added in a statement. "I would be proud to be counted as an actor in the European tradition."

Mirren began her film career in the late 1960s, with titles including Michael Powell's "Age of Consent", and established her reputation in 1980 with gangster movie "The Long Good Friday" also starring Bob Hoskins.

She became a well-known figure in Britain for her work on the police television series "Prime Suspect" which also won her a slew of prizes.

In "The Madness of King George" (1994) she played Queen Charlotte, but it was 14 years later, in the part of another queen, Elizabeth II, that she established herself at the very top of her profession.

Her portrayal of the current British monarch won her a best actress Academy Award, and she was nominated for the same award again for "The Last Station".

Mirren will portray the queen on stage in a play written by the script writer of "The Queen", Peter Morgan. "The Audience" opens in London in 2013.- Reuter

Choice location

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 03:04 AM PDT

A Hong Kong filmmaker has picked Malaysia as one of the locations for his upcoming film on Buddha.

HONG Kong filmmaker Dick Lee Kwok Fai has chosen to put Malaysia on the map with the filming of The Buddha, a Mandarin movie, about the life of Siddhartha Buddha, a legendary prince who lived about 2,500 years ago in India. He was said to have founded a major world religion around the 5th century B.C.

Produced at RM7.5mil, the film is expected to be screened internationally on Wesak Day in May next year. It will also have animation effects.

Put your hands together: (Top row, from left) Angeline Tan, Hurricane Hwang, Ven Master Ming-Ji, Dick Lee, Angela Chan and Calvin Yee, alongside (bottom row, from left) Chye Yang, Daniel Wong, Freddy Wong, Elvis Chin and Jacky Kam are involved in the film, The Buddha. Put your hands together: (Top row, from left) Angeline Tan, Hurricane Hwang, Ven Master Ming-Ji, Dick Lee, Angela Chan and Calvin Yee, alongside (bottom row, from left) Chye Yang, Daniel Wong, Freddy Wong, Elvis Chin and Jacky Kam are involved in the film, The Buddha.

The main cast of the movie comprises Ray Lui Leung Wai (who will play Buddha) and Jennifer Tse Ting Ting (Prince Siddhartha Gautama's wife) from Hong Kong and Mickey He Sheng Ming (Prince Siddhartha) from China.

Local stars taking part include Angeline Tan (Queen Maya, Prince Siddhartha's mother) and Angela Chan Mei Ngor (Prince Siddhartha's maternal aunt).

Lee, the director of The Buddha, says: "Filming will begin on Oct 15 in Laos and Malaysia for a month and three weeks in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province in China." He will be collaborating with a Hong Kong company for post-production work.

In Malaysia, location shoots will be at the famous Ipoh Caves in Perak and A Famosa in Malacca, says Lee, the founder of Sharp Focus Productions Sdn Bhd.

Lee, a devout Buddhist, is making this film because he feels that although people pray for blessings in temples, there are still many worshippers who do not understand the story of Buddha. His film about Buddha will be the second one in Mandarin, the first was believed to be made in the 1970s.

Lee says: "I chose to film in Malaysia because of its scenic locations and the multiracial society. This solves the problem of getting cast members who are Chinese and Indians."

Lui, famed for his role as Ting Lik in the 1980 TVB period drama series The Bund, was chosen to portray Buddha because he played Bodhidharma, a Buddhist monk, in Master Of Zen (1999). He was picked because he is a devout Buddhist and has been actively involved in charitable works.

Meanwhile, Tse (Bruce Lee, My Brother) is cast for the role due to her "demure looks and sad eyes".

Film producer Hurricane Hwang, chairman of NSS Centre, a charity organisation in Ipoh, says the centre fully supports the film.

Tan has a challenging scene in the film. She says: "I don't mind acting and singing roles but not dancing. So, can you imagine I have to dance with an elephant! I hope I won't be scared out of my wits."

The dancing with the elephant scene is to re-enact Queen Maya who dreams of dancing with a white elephant before she becomes pregnant. It will be filmed at A Famosa and there will be an animal trainer on standby.

"Perhaps, it's destined that I get to take part in the film," says Tan, who is known for her character Lucy in the local sitcom Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu.

Ipoh-born Chan has just completed filming a Chinese telemovie, Go Go Oh My God, for the Chinese New Year. She played Guan Yin, the compassionate Goddess of Mercy.

She is looking forward to her role as Prince Siddharta's aunt and nanny who helped raise the young Buddha when his mother passed away shortly after childbirth.

"I was a bit apprehensive that I might have to shave my head. Much to my relief, Dick Lee assured me that I need not go bald as special effects can be used."

However, Lee says, most of the actors may have to go bald. For the scene of Buddha's passing, real Buddhist monks will be roped in for the location shoot in Laos.

Local actors who are also cast in the film such as Jacky Kam, Calvin Yee, Elvis Chin Mun Wai, Chye Yang and Freddie Wong were also present at the press conference.

Ven Master Ming-Ji, president of Malaysia Buddhist Association for Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, is the film's consultant. He has even declined to play a small part in the film, assuring that he will give his spiritual support.

"I hope the film on the Buddha's life will benefit everyone," he says.

The inside tweet

SOME Hollywood actors gave fans a glimpse into the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, on Twitter.

Heidi Klum (@heidiklum)

It takes endurance to lose 8 times! Go @ProjectRunway. Still an honour to be nominated! #Emmys

Klum also posted a picture of her and her Project Runway colleagues partying away at the Governor's Ball.

Mayim Bialik (@missmayim)

#Emmys forgot to bring a snack ... kinda peckish ... heels are off. Saw Tom hanks. And Nicole Kidman. Wow!

Bialik, a first-time nominee for Best Supporting Actress (comedy) for her role as Dr Amy Farrah Fowler in The Big Bang Theory, was pretty excited about being at the awards. She later tweeted, "I knew it. There's always next year :-)" after the winner for her category was announced.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus (@OfficialJLD)

Omg! Omg! Omg! Omg! Omg! #Emmys

Louis-Dreyfus tweeted this after winning an Emmy for Best Lead Actress (comedy) for her role as vice president Selina Meyer in her latest show, Veep.

Jimmy Kimmel (@jimmykimmel)

Ryan Seacrest is super fat in person. #Emmys

The host tweeted a series of hilarious "updates", though most of them were probably fake. He also got actor Tracy Morgan to lie down on the Emmy stage, and then proceeded to tweet "Oh my God – Tracy Morgan just passed out onstage at the Emmys – turn ABC on NOW!", perhaps as a ruse to get people to tune in to the live telecast.

Jesse Tyler Ferguson (@jessetyler)

"You're going down" http://say.ly/nUR4ewO

The Modern Family actor, nominated for a Best Supporting Actor (Comedy) Emmy, was one of the most active twitterers yesterday, posting updates and pictures of his co-stars, his mother, his partner and pretty much everyone else who walked past his way. He also tweeted: "You deserve it! I'm so happy for your #Emmy win @ericstonestreet" to his co-star.

Eric Stonestreet (@ericstonestreet)

Today I'm taking my best friend Paul to the Emmys. He dared me to audition for the first play I ever did at #kstate. #Emmys

Stonestreet, of Modern Family, also posted a picture of Sofia Vergara's sexy behind.

Lena Dunham (@lenadunham)

Didn't @jimmykimmel crush it tonight? The perfect old fashioned host swagger, generous yet saucy. A pleasure to behold!

Dunham, co-creator, writer, director and actress of Girls also posted this reply to the show's producer Judd Apatow, who appeared (on Twitter) to be pretty distraught by his loss: "Where are you!? It's gonna be OK Judd! Your movie comes out soon, you must go on RT @Judd-Apatow: Getting over the hurt."

Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest)

Obsessed with Homeland ... so happy for those guys

The affable host was pretty quiet on Twitter, most probably because he was working on the red carpet with partner-in-crime, Giuliana Rancic.

Josh Groban (@joshgroban)

OK, sorry, had to keep it secret. So much fun!! Happy to sing the 1D to the not-late, great @jimmykimmel. Will miss you everyday. Eventually.

Kimmel and Groban made a fun little skit on stage: A fake "In Memoriam" segment – for the very alive Kimmel – played on screen, with Groban singing One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful. Most hilarious part of the Emmys.

Hugh Bonneville (@hughbon)

Evgenya lost her tweezers and blamed Mario, who denied it & now, all hell's broken loose. I'm perched on the fire escape in a towel. #Emmys

He might play the stoic Earl of Grantham, Robert Crawley, in Downton Abbey, but in real life, Bonneville is a hugely funny guy!

Before heading to the Emmys, Bonneville posted a string of fake tweets about how his stylist Mario and makeup artist Evgenia were fighting with one another, causing him to get dressed and put on his makeup, himself.

He also tweeted: "Evgenya's allergies kicked in because of the pollen & now she's in hospital. Where do I start? #Emmys pic.twitter.com/8UtZXBqF." –
