Fun day with the station

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 03:12 AM PDT

There will be more than music to entertain you at Suria FM's annual concert this Saturday.

IN keeping with tradition, Suria FM listeners are in for a treat this Saturday as the station is organising its annual concert, touted to be its largest ever, at Dataran Putrajaya, Presint 3, in Putrajaya.

The three-hour Konsert Kemuncak Suria FM 2012 will see performances by top local artistes such as Ella, Faizal Tahir, Stacy, Alyah, Shila Amzah, Mojo, Sixth Sense, Jimmy Palikat, One Nation Emcee and Nico.

According to Suria FM's deputy chief operating officer Yusry Abu Samah, organising the concert is the station's way of thanking its loyal listeners who have been supporting them for years.

He added that artistes selected for the concert are based on their popularity with the station's listeners.

"This upcoming concert will mark our fourth year in organising big-scale concerts for free and we expect about 35,000 fans to turn up for the whole day carnival-concert," added Yusry during a press conference recently.

If the popular artistes aren't enough to get music fans excited, the station's popular deejays such as Halim Othman, Nabil Ahmad, Linda Onn, Kenchana Devi, DJ Lin, Reza Mohamed, Bob Ringgo and Tyzo will also be hosting the event.

"Over the years, we have been attracting more and more fans at our annual concerts and we are really excited to see how many will turn up on Sept 29," he said, adding that it will be the third time such a concert is being held at Putrajaya. "We decided that Putrajaya is the best location for the concert due to its accessibility to the listeners and (that) everyone who would like to have a fun day with their families and friends.

"In fact, according to our recent survey, people from Putrajaya make up the bulk of Suria FM listeners," said Yusry. He added that this year's concert is a collaboration with Perbadanan Putrajaya and Malaysia Building Society Berhad (MBSB) as the event's main sponsor.

The day will kick off with a variety of activities at noon and there will be stalls selling various items.

There will also be a karaoke competiton at 3pm for aspiring singers to show off their singing prowess and win cool prizes. "From 5pm till 7pm, there will be mini showcases featuring performances by fresh faces in the local music industry such as Drama Band, Arrora Salwa, Amir Jahari and Klangit," explained Yusry, adding that as a run-up to Konsert Kemuncak Suria FM 2012, the station has organised mini concerts and as well as meet-and-greet sessions with the listeners at various venues, including Taiping, Perak, Kuantan, Pahang, Kluang, Johor, and Kajang, Selangor.

Suria FM is owned and operated by The Star.

> Konsert Kemuncak Suria FM 2012 will be held at Dataran Putrajaya, Presint 3, Putrajaya, on Sept 29 (Saturday). The carnival will start at noon, while the concert will kick off at 8.30pm.

Chris Brown tests positive for marijuana while on probation

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 10:10 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES: R&B singer Chris Brown has tested positive for marijuana, leading a Los Angeles judge on Monday to set a November hearing to decide whether he violated his probation stemming from a 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna.

According to a probation report presented in court, Brown tested positive in June in Virginia, where he is fulfilling his community service, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg said.

Brown, who is midway through a five-year probation sentence, produced a medical marijuana card after the positive test, Schnegg said.

Schnegg said mandatory drug testing was not a condition of Brown's probation. But she scheduled a Nov. 1 hearing to decide whether he had violated his probation on that and other matters, including travel restrictions and fulfillment of his community service.

Schnegg gave Brown, 23, a warning in court, reminding him that he was a role model. "You are not an ordinary person who can sit in your living room and do whatever you want to do," Schnegg told the "Turn Up the Music" singer.

"More importantly, a lot of people look up to you, a lot of kids. What you do and what you say impacts a lot of people." Brown's lawyer, Mark Geragos, said his client had "completed all of his community service."

Brown, who won a Grammy award earlier this year, was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service after pleading guilty to criminal assault for beating Rihanna on the eve of the Grammy awards in 2009. - Reuters
