Cakes, flowers, health products are some of the gifts popular for Mother’s Day

JOHOR BARU: For Mother's Day tomorrow, many like to purchase bouquets of pretty flowers from florist as gifts for their mums.

But for office secretary Chua Lee Hui, 29, she prefers to buy stalks of flowers to arrange to bouquets as gifts to her mother and relatives on the special occasion.

Chua, who has been doing that for the past few years, said she had a penchant for floral arrangement and felt happy to put it to use every year.

"I find that it is more personal and sincere when I create the bouquets from scratch.

"I will usually visit florists to order the colours and types of flowers that I want and go to craft shops to get materials like ribbons and colour papers for my bouquets," she said, adding that she does not mind spending hundreds of ringgit on the flowers.

Judy Florist in Taman Sri Tebrau shop assistant, who only wanted to be known as Lim, said there was aan 80 percent increase in orders for this year's Mother's Day celebration.

He said that carnations are still the customers' favourite for the occasion with pink and red being the most sought-after colours.

Meanwhile, Passionfood café in Taman Pelangi has introduced three types of cakes in conjunction with Mother's Day.

Its co-owner Henny Lumintang said customers can choose from Yam Cheesecake, Salty Cheese Roll and the Totally Chocolate premium cake priced between RM28.80 and RM68.80.

"Our best selling on is the Salty Cheese Roll because it is not too sweet and has a tinge of saltiness, which compliments the cheese sponge roll," she said.

Besides flowers and desserts, people are also presenting their mums with health products.

Eu Yan Sang Taman Sentosa assistant manager Agnes See Siow Li said that the outlet offers hampers priced from RM99 to RM259 with different products catering to different mums.

"Bird's nest and detoxifying formulas are still the most popular gifts for mums as children want to show their appreciation to them for their hard work and dedication to the family," she said.

Defeated candidates in GE13 looking at the bright side of life

JOHOR BARU: Defeated candidates are taking their loss in the general election in their stride and looking at it from the positive side.

Barisan Nasional Batu Pahat candidate Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, who lost the traditional seat to PKR's Mohd Idris Jusi by a majority of 1,732, said that he accepted the defeat.

However, the Umno man said that he felt sorry towards his supporters who stood by him throughout.

"I feel that I have disappointed them in a way but I admit that there may be some mistakes I made in the past five years as Batu Pahat MP and it is reflected in the polls," he told StarMetro.

He said now that he is "jobless", he hopes to finish up his coffee table book on his four years as Deputy Education Minister now that he has the time.

Pengkalan Rinting state seat MCA candidate Chang Mei Kee is also looking at the bright side of things despite losing to her opponent Cheo Yee How of DAP by 1,970.

The lawyer said she wanted to take a month-long break to catch up with friends and family and travel with her daughters.

"As much as my daughters are sad about my defeat, but I think that they are happy at the same time because they get to spend more time with their mother now," said Chang, who is a single mother.

Meanwhile PAS candidate for R. Kumutha, who lost the Tiram state seat in 2013 and 2008 general election, said that she would come back again to contest again if the party's central leadership allows her to.

"Failure is the first step to success and I will not give up just like that because in 2008 I got 8,837 votes and this time round I managed to garner 15,237 votes from the people," she said.

She also said that now that she lost, she wants to spend time bowling and attend aerobic classes to destress after months campaigning.

World Red Crescent Day joy for newborn babies

JOHOR BARU: Three lucky newborns at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here received a brand new baby pram and special goodie bags filled with baby products.

A total of 83 newborn babies warded at the hospital also received goodie bags in conjunction with the World Red Crescent Day celebration. Among the lucky recipients was housewife Eza Biden, 34, who was grateful to receive a baby pram and other goodies on behalf of her newborn son from Malaysia Red Crescent Society (BBSM).

"I am glad to receive a brand new baby pram as I thought of reusing the old pram that I have kept in storage from my first child.

"It was also a memorable moment as for the first time I got to meet the Johor Sultan's consort Raja Zarith Sofia Sultan Idris Shah, who personally presented the gift," she said when met at the hospital here recently.

New mother Lee Hwei Ling who gave birth to her first baby yesterday, was also thankful for the thoughtful gift from BBSM.

"It is a nice gesture of society and I appreciate the gifts they presented," said the 23-year-old clerk.

Another housewife Siti Fatimah Abdul Rahman, 28, thanked the hospital for their services and for the additional goodie bag.

"I gave birth to my second child yesterday at 3.12pm here, and she came out a healthy 2.9kg," she said adding that the goodie bag will help save on some of her expenses.

Raja Zarith, who is also the chairperson of the BBSM National Community Service Committee, presented goodie bags to the three lucky newborns.

Other than goodie bags, BBSM also contributed 20 glucometers (a medical device used to determine the approximate concentration of glucose in the blood), 20 blood pressure meters, and five wheelchairs to the hospital in conjunction with the celebration.
