Malaysian netizens urged to be mature in using social media

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 07:11 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has called on Malaysian netizens to be more mature users of social media.

Noting that social media had no boundaries in terms of disseminating information, he said such a powerful tool should be used for worthwhile purposes.

These, he said, included reaching out to others on matters such as traffic conditions, floods, accidents and so on.

"Like in the United States, people turn to social media to reach out and offer help to those affected by the devastating Hurricane Sandy," he told reporters at the soft launch of the Malaysia Social Media Week 2013 here Friday.

Organised by the Malaysia Social Media Chambers with the cooperation of the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry, the event is scheduled for Feb 26 to March 3, next year.

Meanwhile, Khairy lauded the Government for its use of social media to help spread relevant information. - Bernama

Police didn't disclose Kugan's detention, his mother tells court

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 06:32 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The mother of A. Kugan, who died in police custody, told the High Court here Friday that the police had not disclosed her son's detention to her and did not report it for six days prior to his death.

N. Indra, 44, said although two policemen had questioned Kugan's brother on Jan 15, 2009, they failed to mention that Kugan had been detained.

She was testifying in the RM100mil suit against Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and four others for alleged negligence and breach of statutory duty.

The last time she saw her eldest son was on Jan 13, 2009 after which she looked for him in various police stations, she added.

"My family and I looked for my son (Kugan) in many police stations but didn't find him. The police didn't disclose my son's detention until Jan 20, 2009, although he was arrested on Jan 14, 2009.

"The police hid his detention for six days before he died," she said in a witness statement.

Indra said after she was informed of his death, she identified his body at the Serdang Hospital and found bruises and injuries on it.

The court was also shown a video recording of the condition of Kugan's body.

On Jan 13, Indra filed the suit against Khalid (who was then Selangor police chief); former police constable V. Navindran (who has been found guilty of causing hurt to Kugan); former Subang Jaya Police chief ACP Zainal Rashid Abu Bakar, the Inspector-General of Police and the Government.

In her statement of claim, Indra claimed that all the defendants had failed to ensure the safety, health and welfare of her son Kugan while he was in police custody from Jan 14 to 20, 2009.

Kugan, 23, when he was detained, had been picked up for a suspected car theft.

The proceedings resume on Tuesday before judge Datuk V.T. Singham. - Bernama

SINGAPORE: Immigration officers here have arrested two Malaysian men and an Indian man they were believed to be smuggling out of the country, after checking a departing Malaysia-registered trailer lorry at the Woodlands checkpoint.

The Malaysian trailer lorry driver and a passenger, both 28, appeared nervous when the immigration officers stopped the vehicle for a check at 11.55pm Thursday, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a statement Friday.

The officers found a man crouching inside the storage compartment behind the passenger seat of the 40-foot trailer lorry, and immediately arrested the three men, it said, adding that the vehicle had been impounded.

The ICA said it took a serious view of attempts by foreigners to overstay, enter or depart Singapore illegally.

Under the Immigration Act, the penalty for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months plus a minimum of three strokes of the cane, while the penalty for illegal departure is a fine of up to S$2,000 (RM4,995), a jail term of up to six months, or both. - Bernama
