Deniz Koyu breaks in to the top 150 on DJ list Posted: 02 Nov 2012 07:11 AM PDT THE PAST year has been hectic for up-and-coming German-born DJ/producer Deniz Koyu, ever since being considered as a big time talent and one of the breakthrough DJ/producers of 2011 in world electronic dance music (EDM) circles. Compliments like that are akin to gold dust in the clubbing world, especially when they come from established international names such as Fedde Le Grand from the Netherlands, and Swedish House Mafia's Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso. This year, even MTV has been quick to add Koyu to their "EDM Rookies To Watch" list, calling him "a blazing new talent" and putting him in good company with fellow rising DJs such as Alesso, Zedd, R3hab and Nicky Romero. "2012 has been very fast, hectic and super exciting for me," Koyu said in an e-mail interview from Germany, prior to his debut Malaysian visit tonight where he appears at Zouk Club KL's Global night. "Highlights for me have been my (music) releases Bong, Follow You (ft Wynter Gordon) and Zdarlight with Fedde Le Grand," he said. On the live appearance front, Koyu has already performed at world-renowned festivals and clubs from North America to Ibiza, Spain. "Gig wise, I was able to do many great shows including Ultra Music Festival, Sensation White, Cosmic Opera with Axwell, Ushuaia with Sebastian Ingrosso and so many more." Koyu can still be considered fresh in the scene, with releases of his music and remix work, mostly in electro house and progressive house, dating back only as recently as 2007. "In my teenage years I was influenced by Daft Punk, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and other electronic bands and from there, I got into house music," he said. "I always loved to do creative work, especially at the computer, and I learnt how to play the piano as a child. So that's why I started experimenting with music production while I was still going to school. Back then, I had no idea it would end up as my profession one day, Koyu added. Already his success has seen his profile rise even further in the last couple of months, having just broken into the Top 150 of the world-renowned annual DJ Poll conducted by British specialist magazine DJ Mag. "I was very happy to make it that high this year. I went up by more than 400 positions compared to 2011 so that was a huge jump for me and I really appreciate the support from all my fans who voted for me." And Koyu is certainly set to continue his rapid rise in the ranks, if his production and gig plans are anything to go by. "I will be working on more exciting collaborations early next year which I can't reveal at this point, as well as more solo singles. "Gig wise, I want to play at more festivals next year and, of course, return to my favourite clubs and locations which I've seen this year. "I will put more production work in my shows next year, with visuals, some crazy road tours and more," Koyu said. New-found fans and EDM enthusiasts can expect some good vibes tonight at Global presents Deniz Koyu. He's certainly promising a hell of a party. The night will also be supported by Zouk KL resident DJs Terence C, Goldfish and Blink. ZOUK KL is located at 113, Jalan Ampang, KL. Admission (with one drink): RM45 Ladies / RM55 Men. Battling it out to be number one Posted: 02 Nov 2012 07:10 AM PDT AN IMPRESSIVE array of newly introduced professional DJ equipment awaits the winners of the seventh annual Malaysian DJ Battle after tomorrow's final to be held at The Stage KL (Avenue K), Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. The latest CDJ mixers and music production equipment from the likes of Pioneer, Rane and Reloop Asia were already on show at the semifinals held over the last two Saturdays at Ecobar, Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya. It was something of a coup for the first batch of semifinalists in the DJ Mix (CDJ) category two Saturdays ago as they had the honour of being the first in Malaysia to test their skills on the newly introduced equipment, including the infamous CDJ2000 Nexus, which seems to be a talking point with anyone who knows anything about the DJing world. Not to be outdone, the second group of semifinalists last Saturday also had their chance to try their mettle on the pieces of hardware. Two major categories are up for contention at the final tomorrow — Art of Turntablism and DJ Mixing. Eight finalists will contest the old-school Art of Turntablism category, while six finalists will vie for the DJ Mix title. Art of Turntablism finalists are Crazy D, DJ Balee, DJ Smith, DJ Tatsuro, Twist-Rox, Scooby Max, Tipsy Han and Saint Rafeal. The DJ Mix finalists are Aiman Jaafar, A-MarQ, Blackheart, Kaiserkev, Pimppy Dog and Saint Rafeal (the only one contesting both finals). Come and watch the future of Malaysian DJing in the making. Free entry from 8pm to 11pm, after which cover charges will apply as MKFZ and MC Terry T get tight with the night. For details visit www.facebook.com/malaysiandjbattlechampionship or call 016-223 1120 / 03-2143 3440. The finals are brought to you by Bionic Academy, Take Off Records and Chemistry Recordings. |
