Hospital plans to conduct more awareness programmes Posted: 01 Nov 2012 06:04 PM PDT MUAR: The Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital here plans to conduct more awareness programmes related with diseases and illnesses, including cancers, anaesthesia and organ donation. Its director Dr Selahuddeen Abd Aziz said it would be good if the people understand the needs to go for regular medical and health checkups to detect any illness. Speaking at the launching of the hospitals World Anaesthetic 2012 Day celebration, he said any campaign planned should involve as many people as possible. "We want people in the district to know the importance of health care and anaesthetic is one important department in the medical sector. "People should know about anaesthetic and the importance of having anaesthetists during operations," he said. Dr Selahuddeen said at the moment the hospital only had four anaesthetists and the number was very small as compared to the number of operations needed to be conducted. He said this had caused delays in carrying out operations for certain patients and the hospital had to even conduct operations on Saturdays. Earlier, hospital anaesthetic department chief Dr Norlina Yusoff said the hospitals anaesthetic service was no longer confined only to the operation rooms. She said it had taken a wider scope and covered medical services at the intensive-care unit, acute pain service, organ donation and epidural for pregnant mothers. The Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital, she added, was among seven hospitals in the country now providing day care surgery to its patients. On the World Anaesthetic Day celebration, Dr Norlina said it was supposed to be held on Oct 16 but was delayed as the hospital had other important programmes. She said the celebration was to mark the day Dr William Thomas Green used the ether inhaler for the first time during an operation at the Massachusetts General Hospital on Oct 16, 1846. "The hospital have been celebrating the birth of modern anaesthesia every year to instil awareness on the importance of anaesthetic to the staff and the public. "We want the people to know about anaesthesia and not be afraid of it," she added. |
