SEVERAL former internationals were honoured during the Malaysian Indian Athletes Appreciation Night held in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The 10 Malaysian athletes comprising Datuk N. Sri Shanmuganathan, Datuk Santokh Singh, Datuk M. Karathu, Datuk Paul Mony Samuel, Datuk James Selvaraj, M. Ramayah, M. Kumaresan, C. Paramalingam, V. Subramaniam and V. Anggamah were all presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Minister in the Prime Minister's department Datuk Seri G. Palanivel presented the awards to the 10 recipients.

Also present at the eventwas Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

The event was organised by the Malaysian Indian Sports and Culture Foundation in conjunction with the International Indian Youth Games.

It was held at the AIMST University located in Sungai Petani, Kedah, recently.

Organising chairman T. Mohan said the event was held as they wanted to appreciate the contributions of the former athletes to the country and the community.

"All the recipients were champions in their respective fields.

"They are considered icons and we are very proud to honour them,'' said Mohan.

Sri Shan and Paramalingam had represented Malaysia in hockey.

Paramalingam is still actively involved in coaching at the grassroots.

There were three recipients — Santokh Singh, Karathu and Paul — from football.

Santokh was one of the most feared defenders in Malaysia and had formed a formidable partnership with Datuk Soh Chin Aun in the 1970s and '80s.

Karathu, after his playing career, had coached Perak and Kelantan as well as clubs in Singapore and India.

Paul was one of the most respected administrators in football.

He had served in the FA of Malaysia, Asean Football Federation, Asian Football Confederation and FIFA.

James had represented Malaysia in badminton and played in three Thomas Cup finals.

Cyclist Kumaresan was Malaysia's first finalist in the Olympics. Veteran golfer Ramayah is still active in the professional tour.

Subramaniam and Anggamah were from athletics.

Subramaniam had won several honours as a walker while Anggamah was a winner in the 400m and 800m.

James said he was pleased to share the stage with some of the great athletes.
