Only 10% of road construction works done after completion date Posted: 05 Oct 2012 11:01 PM PDT JOHOR BARU: Residents and road users at Jalan Bakawali 49, Taman Johor Jaya here are frustrated that the road construction works, which was supposed to be completed on Oct 1 has reached only 10% of completion. Resident K. Nathan, 52, said that the road upgrading work, which began on Aug 27, caused the whole road to be closed. "Since the whole stretch was closed, it has caused a lot of inconvenience to those living in the area especially those who send their children to the schools nearby. "Usually it takes about a five-minute drive to reach the schools, now we need to take a different route that takes us 20 minutes to reach the destination," he said. Motor repairs shop owner Man Kim Chong 56, said that his business has declined by 70% since the road was closed because customers found it difficult to enter the area. "A lot of businesses especially food outlets in the area are complaining of daily losses and we are upset that there is now a delay in the completion," he said. Hawker Faridah Ahmad, 51, said that she was forced to temporarily stop her food stall business near hr house along Jalan Bakawali 74 due to the road works. "I feel a slight pinch but I can still rely on my husband but there are single mothers who find it difficult to make a living," she said. Johor Baru Central Municipal Council (MPJBT) Johor Baru zone councillor Tan Tuan Peng said that he had met with the council's president with Johor Jaya assemblyman Tan Cher Puk to address the matter. "We hope we can appoint a new contractor after finding that the current one is not efficient in carrying out the upgrading works as there were days where there was only one worker onsite," he said. Meanwhile, the roadwork along Jalan Rosmerah Utama nearby has been completed one week ahead of the scheduled time, much to the residents delight. The assemblyman said the project went smoothly despite some complications in the initial stages. "Hopefully these two road upgrading projects worth RM760,000 would solve flood problems that frequently occur in the area," he said. |
Syndicate crippled with seizure of drugs and arrest of leader Posted: 05 Oct 2012 10:59 PM PDT TEMERLOH: A syndicate active in supplying drugs in the district was crippled with the arrest of the ring leader and seizure of drugs worth RM10,000 by the police here. Acting OCPD Supt Zundin Mahmood said the leader known as "Mat Lazim", 23, and his woman companion, 17, were detained in their Perodua Viva last week. "Acting on a tip-off, a team led by Insp S. Naventheran intercepted the car driven by the couple along the Kuala-Lumpur-Kuantan bypass road near Mentakab. "Upon checking the vehicle, we found packets of drugs weighing about 227.8gm believed to be heroin and syabu," he said, adding that police also seized RM2,280 in cash, believed to be profits from the ill-gotten gains. Supt Zundin said initial investigations revealed the syndicate was active for the past three months supplying drugs to Kuala Krau, Kerdau and Songsang. He said the case would be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty, if convicted. "Background checks showed both suspects are locals and have no previous convictions. "We are also in the midst of tracking down other syndicate members and the origin of the drugs," he said. Supt Zundin said police would continue to conduct surveillance and regular operations to rid the neighbourhood of any unhealthy activities. He urged the public to provide them with information to keep crime in check and help reduce the crime index in the district. |
Genting staff learn how to ride safely in campaign Posted: 05 Oct 2012 11:00 PM PDT BENTONG: Genting Malaysia Berhad will continue to remind its employees to adopt road safety measures and be more cautious while travelling to work. Its senior vice president (public relations and communications) Datuk Anthony Yeo said the company had initiated a campaign with Socso to educate its 14,000 employees. "About 20% or 2,800 of our staff are using motorcycles to work and return home daily. "Statistics showed motorcyclists are more prone to accidents which may result in death or serious injuries. "We do not want our staff to be part of the statistics and efforts would be carried out regularly to create an awareness on riding safely to and from work," he said during a road safety campaign at the hill resort recently. Also present was Socso deputy chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammad. Yeo said human factor was found to be one of the main contributing factors of fatal accidents involving motorcyclists. He said as such, they should ride carefully and refrain from speeding, inspect their machine regularly and wear safety helmet in the correct manner. "We would work closely with the authorities such as Road Transport Department and Road Safety Department to promote road safety," he said, citing the campaign to encourage children who rode with their parents to wear safety helmets launched in 2009. Yeo said some 4,500 pupils from nine states were given free helmets approved by Sirim to ensure a safer journey while commuting to their schools. He said they had also set aside RM55,000 to sponsor free helmets for residents in Bentong district. Meanwhile, Dr Mohammed Azman said Socso had paid out RM1.71bil for contributors who were involved in accidents at worksites and while commuting last year. He said out of the 59,897 contributors who were involved in accidents, about 40% or 24,249 of them had met with road accidents. "Motorcyclists are among those who received the highest quantum in terms of payout due to road accidents resulting in deaths, suffering serious injuries and prolonged sick leave. "Majority of the accident cases occurred within a range of about 4km to and from work and while on the way home," he said. Dr Mohammed Azman commended the efforts by Genting and urged other organisations to emulate the initiatives. He said through such campaigns, it could help the authorities to create an awareness and reduce worksites and commuting accidents. |
