Wholesome event for the family

Posted: 28 Sep 2012 06:14 AM PDT

PARTICIPANTS of the annual Giant Kids Run and their parents had a great time at the event.

Sabinesshver, 6, son of former national runner M. Arul Thever, emerged the champion of the boys' four- to six-year-old category. He said he trained daily for the run with his friends.

"It is really great that Giant is organising this Kids Run annually. We are regular Giant customers and when we found out about the race when shopping one day, we decided to register our son for the race and also told our neighbours in Semenyih, friends at Arul Running Club to enter," said his mother Malathee Krishinasamy.

"We find it motivational for our children to be involved in outdoor activities such as running and also develop sportsmanship values. It is indeed a good thing for our children."

"So among our friends at the club and neighbours' children, 16 registered for the Giant Kids Run and we have five winners from the club. We look forward to next year's Kids Run!"

Another club member, K. Thevanraj came in second in the seven- to eight-year-old-category.

"I trained every day with my friends at the club. It was a lot of work but it was fun and I'm so glad to have won second place in the race. I look forward to joining the race again next year,'' he said.

The first prize winner of the girls' nine- to 10-year-old category, Ainur Shafiqah, nine, said, "I've always liked to run and I'm so glad I've won first prize this year! I came in second last year. I'm also glad that my brother was a top five winner for his race too!''

Meanwhile, the students of SJK (C) Kwong Hon swept the top two places in the 11- to 12-year-old category.

It was an easy feat for school runners Wong Chen Mun, 12, and Lau Jin Ying, 11, who also took part in the inaugural run last year.

The girls' school Physical Education teacher and coach, Eg Lay Beng said: "This was the school's second time participating in the run. Chen Mun was a runner-up in last year's race and that made her even more determined to train and race better this year.

"Chen Mun is over the moon with her first place win today and she is so happy that her friend and fellow school mate, Jin Ying came in second. We also have a third winner for our school, Tee Jing Wen, 10, who came in third in her nine- to 10-year-old category race. I'm very proud of the girls."
