Special programme for children

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:58 AM PDT

MUAR: The Health Ministry have launched a special programme for children to detect stale or rotten food through their senses of sight, smell and taste.

Deputy Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin said this is to ensure the children only ate fresh food and reject stale food if served.

She said the programme had been launched in Sabah, Kelantan and Johor and feedbacks on the programme were very encouraging.

"We called the programme Lihat, Hidu dan Rasa or see, smell and taste to enable children to evaluate what they eat.

"There also several other diet-related programmes for the children to curb obesity and other health complications," she said at the opening of the Bakri Umno division Puteri wing delegates' conference recently.

Rosnah added that the ministry din not ban the sale of chocolate, but wanted canteen operators at all schools to serve healthy food to the children.

The ministry, she added, wanted the operators to observe on the types of food they served as it did not want children to eat junk or unhealthy food.

A suitable diet table had also been proposed to the Education Ministry for school children and it is up to them to evaluate the proposals.

"We have asked for 15 food items, including coffee, tea and carbonated drinks not to be sold at school canteens as they are not suitable for children," she said.

Rosnah, who is also Puteri Umno chief, earlier challenged Bakri Umno Puteri wing to enrol 300 new members every month to increase its membership.

"Bakri Puteri Umno only has about 1,700 members and I want the committee leaders to look for new members from today.

"I challenge the wing to get 300 new members every month to help Bakri Barisan Naisonal retake the seats lost to the opposition parties in 2008 general election," she added.

Stay away from corruption and drugs: Razali

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:58 AM PDT

MUAR: Malaysia does not want any of its athletes to be involved in any corrupt practices or drug abuse as it hinders sport developments.

Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Razali Ibrahim said such practices would also affect our athletes from participating in international-level events.

He said all sports bodies and associations should act against any members found involved in corruption or doping.

"We feel very disappointed with the recent events where three of our athletes went missing to skip a doping test.

"The National Sport Institute (NSI) set up a special team to keep close tab on all track and field athletes to check on drug abuse and 11 of the athletes have been tested negative," he said at the launch of the Muar Little Champs Camp here recently.

Razali added that all national sports bodies have signed an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to ensure their members and officials were not involved with any banned substance.

Besides drug abuse, the ministry was also concerned over allegations of corruption among officials and players in the Presidents Cup football tournament.

He said such allegations would disappoint many parties if they were true and weaken or hinder the development of soccer if no action was taken.

"It is up to the relevant associations to act against those found involved in such practice or else the world soccer body would act against Malaysia," added Razali.

On the Little Champs Camp programme, Razali said 200 children below the age of 12 were selected to undergo the special sports encouragement programme.

He said these children would learn the basic skills in sports and all about sport science, which included a healthy diet and first-aid knowledge.

The programme, organised by NSI, focuses on football, hockey, archery and mini-athletic events as they happen to be very popular sporting events.

"We hope one day Muar will produce world-level sportsmen or athletes from among these children", he added.

Typhoid jabs for eatery operators

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 04:57 AM PDT

MUAR: Food handlers including school canteen operators and their helpers must receive typhoid jabs and undergo health check-ups every six months.

State Women, Family, Health and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said it is compulsory for employees in the sector to get the jabs before they are employed the restaurants, food stalls and canteens.

Dr Robia added that the Health Department would shut down any food outlets if the operators or helpers did not undergo the required health check-ups.

"We have strict regulations on those who sell or serve food in the state as we want to ensure they are healthy.

"Besides the typhoid jabs, the operators and helpers must also have clean fingernails, kempt hair and neat in appearance," she said at the launch of the state-level Kembara Riang Ria Pemakanan Di Sekolah Rendah at SJKC Chin Kwang Wahyu in Parit Jawa.

Dr Robia said the department would also conduct regular checks at all premises that sells or serves food and those that are found to be dirty would be closed.

Dirty food handlers would be charged in the court and a shutdown period of 14 days would be sufficient to teach them in maintaining cleanliness.

Dr Robia also urged parents and schools to encourage children to only take healthy food and to control their eating habits to prevent obesity.

She said the number of obese standard one pupils had increased from 6.0% in 2002 to 6.8% in 2008 while obesity among form one pupils had increased from 9.6% in 2002 to 9.9% in 2008.

Although school canteens are serving healthy food, she added, there are traders who peddle junk food and sweetened drinks to the children outside the school compounds.

"We have asked the relevant authorities to check on such traders and take appropriate action if the traders are found to violate any laws.

"We have to be very strict on matters related to food consumption among school children," she added.
