Boundless energy

NINE years ago, Misha Omar burst into the music industry and captured the hearts of many with her beautiful ballad Bunga Bunga Cinta.

The Kota Baru, Kelantan-born lass then went on to win the best vocal award with that song (taken from her self-titled debut released in 2002) at the 18th annual song competition Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL) in 2003. The song itself was named best song of the year at AJL.

Since then, Misha, 29, has gone from strength to strength.

One thing about this beauty though, you don't read much about her apart from her new albums and upcoming plays or dramas. She tends to keep away from the tabloid spotlight and doesn't indulge the celebrity lifestyle.

"I guess I made a point to keep a low profile unless I have something to tell my fans such as a new album or new ventures. Other than that I'm happy being below the radar. I like it that way," said the talented star.

"Seriously, I'm not here for the glamour of it. I love singing and if I have anything to announce about (my singing) then I'll tell everyone. If I have nothing to tell, then I rather be an ordinary mother tending to my son Adam, sending him to school and stuff," she added.

Misha was referring to the love of her life – five-year-old Muhammad Adam Emir (who she legally adopted five years ago).

And despite her determination to keep far from the tabloid headlines, there are always rumours about her.

Last year, the gutsy gal spent several months just trying to fend off wedding rumours. The latest being that Misha was allegedly married as the third wife to a businessman, which she denied.

"There is no way I can stop these people from spreading untrue stories about me. And these stories can be really hurtful but I guess as an artiste, I have to face it as part and parcel of being in this industry. If only the story about me getting hitched is true," said Misha with a hearty laugh.

These days, Misha's main focus is her little boy. The dedicated mum role suits her fine.

Her music career is also something that has given her satisfaction.

Now that her career-spanning album entitled Dia ... Misha has been released, she is occupied with interviews apart from theatre work. Obviously, she prefers the media attention to be on her music and the pop catalogue that she has amassed through the years.

Dia ... Misha does a fine job in summarising Misha's pop career, with chart favourites such as Bunga Bunga Cinta, Nafas Cahaya, Cinta Adam Dan Hawa, Pulangkan (duet with Izad Izuddin), Ku Seru, Dedebu Cinta, Sampai Di Sini, Halaman Cinta, Lilitan Asmara, Jawapanmu, Cinta (duet with Jaclyn Victor) and Tak Ku Duga (duet with Saiful) on board.

"I'm really excited about this album. It also includes two new compositions – Berlalu (composed by Wayne Gideon and lyrics by Ad Samad) and Detik Antara Waktu (penned by Rudy). I also did a cover of Kerana (composed by M. Nasir and popularised by Alleycats) which has been given fresh arrangements by composer Ramli MS," she said.

Despite being a pop-centric music lover, her list of favourite local acts is also an interesting one on her Facebook page. You'll find contemporary acts like Yuna, Monoloque, Zee Avi, One Buck Short, Couple, Liyana Fizi and others listed.

It does prove that she is savvy with the sounds of the new generation. But she needs to remind the young masses of her early work.

This 16-track compilation, if anything, gets fans and newcomers up to speed with the whole Misha Omar story.

"The past nine years have been filled with laughter, happiness and also tears. But from every tear shed, I've gained new strength."

Misha previous albums include Misha (2002), Aksara (2004) and Misha Omar (2008), which have been well-received. Each CD has given her a healthy pop profile in the local music scene.

Apart from the compilation, Misha is also all excited about her upcoming play Mak Dara Nyonya alongside Tania Zainal, Khatijah Tan, Juhara Ayob, Sherry Abdullah, Fara Fauzana and Sarimah Ibrahim. The comical play offers up two stories – Mak Dara and Nyonya, the former tells the tale of a former beauty queen while the latter is about an antique dealer, inheritance and murder treats.

Produced by Siti Rohayah Atan and directed by Rosminah Tahir, the play will take centre stage at Matic in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, from July 6 to July 12.

Misha agreed to a role in the play because of the interesting script, plus it featured a strong female cast.

"I was drawn to the storyline. It tells about the lives of two different women Dara and Nyonya, who have lives that are ... well, drama-filled.

"I play the Keponakan C role. It has been a big challenge because the dialogue is quite long. I really had to put in extra work to memorise the lines. Apart from understanding the storyline, working together with a great team really helped me in playing my role."

Misha noted that the chance to work alongside a theatre actress like Juhara Ayob was simply priceless.

"To be honest, I just can't wait to go on stage! One thing about theatre is that the commitment prior and during the staging gives me a different level of satisfaction," said Misha whose acting credits (in theatre) include Gamat The Musical, Uda Dan Dara and Tun Mahathir: The Musical.

Dia ... Misha is released by Sony Music. The play Mak Dara Nyonya will be staged at Matic, Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur from July 6-12. Tickets available now at www.ticket2u.biz are priced at RM32, RM52 dan RM82. For enquiries, call % 03-4147 8600, 012-297 7220 and 013-629 3825. Browse makdaranyonya.blogspot.com.

Chris Brown wins a leading 4 BET Awards (Updated)

Posted: 27 Jun 2011 12:20 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (AP): Amid awards for the top artists, actors and athletes, Steve Harvey was recognized for his humanitarian work at the BET Awards.

BET Chairman and Chief Executive Debra Lee called the 54-year-old entertainer "a true gentleman who acts like a comedian but thinks like a citizen of the world" as she presented him with the Humanitarian Award.

Harvey thanked God and his fellow philanthropists as he accepted the honor.

Patti LaBelle also accepted a special honor at Sunday's ceremony; Gladys Knight presented her with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

"I plan to hold myself up higher because I've gotten this wonderful award," the 67-year-old singer said, and then she grabbed a microphone and sang a pair of hits, including the breakthrough hit "Lady Marmalade."

Harvey and LaBelle were among dozens of artists recognized at the BET Awards, which were presented at the Shrine Auditorium.

The night's leading nominee, Chris Brown, collected four awards in all. The 21-year-old singer won a pair of prizes early in the show and two fan-voted awards at the end of the ceremony.

Brown was named best male R&B artist and won best collaboration for his song "Look At Me Now" with Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes.

Brown accepted the collaboration award after performing a medley that including the winning track.

"Public-speaking is not my strong suit," he said, thanking BET and his fans before passing the microphone to Wayne, who expressed gratitude to Brown for including him on the track. Busta Rhymes rapped his acceptance.

Earlier in the ceremony, Brown also thanked his fans and the network: "I appreciate all the support. I know it's been a long road, so I appreciate every blessing in front of me."

Lil Wayne also came on stage when Nicki Minaj accepted her award for best female hip-hop artist.

"I can't believe for the first time I get to share a moment like this with the person who saw me rapping on a staircase," she said of the rapper and producer, who was incarcerated when she won the same prize last year. "Lil Wayne, I love you."

Minaj was joined by Justin Bieber to present the male hip-hop artist award later in the show. Kanye West won but wasn't on hand to accept the trophy.

Instead of traditional awards-show winners' envelopes, winners were revealed on a tablet device provided by Sprint. But the tablet proved tricky when it was time to announce the winner of the Viewers' Choice award.

A fan was brought on stage to announce the winner, and she initially said Brown won. Then she corrected herself to say Rihanna won, and Drake came on stage to claim the trophy. After a commercial break, host Kevin Hart clarified that "there was a mistake," and Brown had indeed been the viewers' choice.

Other winners included Diddy Dirty Money, named best group, and Jaden Smith and Willow Smith, who tied as winners of the Young Stars award.

But the show was really about the performances, which were plentiful. Mary J. Blige opened the ceremony, performing her hits "All Night Long" and "Real Love" before being joined by Anita Baker. The divas performed a duet of "Caught Up in the Rapture."

Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled and Ace Hood shared the stage for "Hustle Hard." Alicia Keys unveiled a new song, before lapsing into "A Woman's Worth," for which she was joined by Bruno Mars, and her hit, "Fallin'."

Jill Scott sang in a speakeasy setting. Trey Songz took off his shirt during his performance, even after host Kevin Hart said the young singer looks "like a beige greyhound" shirtless.

Donnie McClurkin kicked off a gospel celebration, with Mary Mary and Deitrick Haddon joining in to sing "Thank You."

Beyonce performed from across the pond: Her headlining set at the Glastonbury Music Festival was beamed into the Shrine from England.
