| AG orders freeze of Amalilio’s assets in Philippine cheating case Posted: 08 Feb 2013 07:17 AM PST KUALA LUMPUR: Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail has directed the Malaysian authorities to "check and freeze" all financial records and assets of a suspect, pertaining to a RM895mil cheating case in the Philippines. In a statement here Friday, he said the Attorney-General's Chambers was committed to assist in all prosecution against any criminal case, regardless of citizenship. "Yesterday, the Attorney-General's Chambers received a formal request from the Philippine Department of Justice for Mutual Legal Assistance on criminal matters. "This request is currently being handled by the International Affairs Division, Attorney-General's Chambers," he added. Abdul Gani said, on Wednesday, a meeting was held at his office between him and the Philippine Department of Justice Deputy Minister Jose Vicente B.Salazar, Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia J. Eduardo Malaya, First Secretary of the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia, Maria Antonina Oblena, and Political Attache of the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia Joy Calip. "During the meeting, Salazar requested that the suspect be extradited to the Philippines to face criminal charges and a freezing order on the assets, savings and investments owned by the suspect and persons related to him," he said. Earlier reports said the suspect, Muhammad Kamal Sa'aid aka Mohamad Sufian Saaid or Amalilio, was on the Philippine Government's 'wanted list' for allegedly cheating RM895mil through a get-rich-quick scheme. When the Philippine Government ordered his arrest last November, he fled to Sabah. Earlier media reports also said Amalilio was arrested on Jan 22 this year, in Ranau, Sabah and the Malaysian police found that he was on the Philippine Government's wanted list. The Philippine authorities then sent a team to Sabah to bring Amalilio back to the Philippines to face charges there. However, 10 minutes before Amalilio and agents from the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation boarded the plane to the Philippines, the Malaysian police stopped them. That was because, investigations revealed his Philippine passport was a fake, and that in reality, he was a Malaysian. Therefore, deporting him to the Philippines had to be made in accordance with the Mutual Assistance Criminal Matters Act 2002. Abdul Gani said, on Jan 25, Amalilio was arrested by the Malaysian police at Terminal Two, Kota Kinabalu International Airport in Sabah for possession of a fake foreign passport. He said the arrest was to enable investigations under section 12(1)(d) of the Passport Act 1966. "Subsequently, Amalilio was charged on Feb 4, and he pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment by the magistrate's court on the same day," added the attorney-general. - Bernama Related Stories: |
| Malaysia Chinese New Year open house this Feb 16 Posted: 08 Feb 2013 06:09 AM PST KUALA LUMPUR: Information, Communications and Culture Secretary-General Datuk Seri Kamaruddin Siaraf today officiated the pre-launch of the Malaysia Chinese New Year Open House 2013 at Pusat Bandar Puchong, near here. The Malaysia Chinese New Year Open House 2013 (MRTM), to be held on Feb 16, is scheduled to be opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak at 8pm. Kamaruddin said the ministry was organising the function so that all Malaysians could join in the festivities and joy of celebrating Chinese New Years with the Chinese community nationwide. "This Chinese New Year, the government and non-governmental organisations (NGO) have carried out programmes including gotong-royong to bring all races closer," he said. The celebrations to be held nationwide also hopes to increase awareness among Malaysians that Chinese New Year is the same as other celebrations. During the launch, Kamaruddin distributed oranges, ang pows and invitations to the function to over a thousand people at the event. Meanwhile, locals welcomed the government's idea to hold a Malaysia open house in their area. A resident, Lim Yee Wai, 35, said he was proud that his neighbourhood was chosen as one of the hosts this year and said he couldn't believe the government gave attention to the area. - Bernama |
| Temple break-in accused charged in hospital ward Posted: 08 Feb 2013 06:05 AM PST SUNGAI SIPUT: A 24-year-old man who broke into a Hindu temple last year was charged in a ward at the Sungai Siput hospital here Friday. S. Sothivanan, 24, who is being treated for a heart ailment, however, claimed trial to committing the offence at the Devi Sri Maha Mariamman Devasthanam temple at No.32, Jalan Kuala Kangsar here between 9.30pm on Oct 6, 2012 and 4.30am the following day. He allegedly carted away RM10,000 worth of loot including three gold pieces, an ornament and RM250 cash. Magistrate Ahmad Shamil Azad Abdul Hamid set bail at RM5,000 in one surety and fixed Mar 4 for re-mention. Deputy Public Prosecutor Hafizah Zahidah Abdullah prosecuted while counsel B.
