Posted: 23 Jun 2011 06:14 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has named three traditional products - Mistura Zhike, Chi Kat Pills and Herbaios-Zuekertec Capsule - that contained scheduled poisons.

In a statement Thursday, the ministry said it had cancelled the registration of the said products by Metro Signature Sdn Bhd, Nature Park Enterprise and Sinar Aman Pharmaceutical (M) Sdn Bhd since May 26.

Mistura Zhuike contained ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, which are controlled medicines used as decongestants in cold medicines.

Indiscriminate use can cause serious adverse effects such as hypertension, hallucination and delusion.

According to the statement, Chi Kat Pills contained ephedrine and Herbaios-Zuekertec Capsule had glibenclamide and metformin.

Without proper diagnosis and monitoring these substances can cause hypoglycemia (excessive reduction in blood sugar) with symptoms such as dizziness, tremor, sweating, confusion and lethargy. This may lead to convulsion, unconsciousness or coma for diabetic patients.

Anyone in possession of these products is advised to immediately cease selling, distributing or using it and seek medical advice for further information.

Selling and distributing these products is an offence under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.

Any individual who commits such an offence can be fined up to a maximum of RM25,000 or imprisoned not exceeding three years or both for the first offence.

A subsequent offence is punishable with a fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both.

A company found guilty can be fined up to RM50,000 for the first offence and a maximum of RM100,000 for a subsequent offence. - Bernama

Hisham orders probe into death threat

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 05:11 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry has ordered an immediate investigation into death threats made against participants of the Bersih 2.0 rally.

"We are taking the threat very seriously," said Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein during a press conference at the Parliament lobby on Thursday.

He added that he would personally ensure that the police investigated the threats.

An unknown sender had sent an SMS to Bersih chairperson Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan Thursday morning threatening to kill her and "those around her" if they went ahead with the rally on July 9.

"I will be going to Bukit Aman after this and I will ensure the police look into the SMS and where it originated from to ensure that the threat is not real," he said.

"A lot of things go around through SMS. Even I get death threats."

However, he said, as it involved the Bersih rally, it had to be taken seriously.

Meanwhile, Ambiga, along with several other Bersih 2.0 organising committee members, have lodged police reports.

PM: Total review of PSD scholarship policy in 2012

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 05:10 AM PDT

PETALING JAYA: A total review of the Public Service Department (PSD) scholarship policy will be conducted next year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the review would include whether to "reserve" scholarship offers for top scorers at university-entry level and providing small bursaries for SPM-level students for them to undertake pre-university courses such as STPM, matriculation or A-levels.

"We will work out a new policy next year," he said on Thursday during the one FM Morning Kaki radio show.

His son, Nor Ashman also appeared on the show.

He said the key was to give scholarships to those able to achieve very good results and a place at top universities.

"Giving scholarships at SPM level is not a good idea. Even if students do well in their O-levels, it doesn't mean they will do well in their A-levels," he added.

Najib added it was important to be "fair and balanced" in the process of awarding scholarships to ensure that all communities benefited from them.

On another matter, Najib said the Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (Prima) would be launched next month to offer houses or condominiums in urban areas that were worth less than RM220,000 for those aged below 35.

He said that a portion of land at the old Sungai Besi airport would be allocated for the construction of the units adding a developer had yet to be appointed.
