GE13: Pahang caretaker government will continue to care for people

Posted: 05 Apr 2013 06:28 PM PDT

KUANTAN: The Pahang caretaker government will continue to care for the needs of the people until a new government assumes office after the general election.

Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said all former Barisan Nasional assemblymen would not run away from their responsibilities to service the people.

"In fact, we have been working for the people throughout since the last elections right up to the dissolution of the Parliament.

"We do not work just because of the general election and would continue our services regardless of whether we are still a YB (Yang Berhormat) or not," he said after chairing the last state executive councillors meeting in the Pahang Foundation building here on Wednesday.

The meeting which started at about 2.30pm ended more than three hours later.

Adnan said the meeting was a normal affair to discuss basic administrative duties without delving on any major decisions or financial matters.

"As you can see, the files are not as thick as other Wednesdays.

"As for the list of candidates, all have been sorted out including the swapping of seats among Barisan component parties, however it is still subject to some last minute changes," he said.

Adnan said there would not be many new faces but as far as he was concerned, all of those nominated to contest were "winnable" candidates.

He said despite the dissolution of the state assembly, all the former Barisan assemblymen would continue to work on the ground and attend to the people's woes.

"I am satisfied with the work carried out by all Barisan assemblymen, executive councillors and heads of department over the past five years.

"If given the mandate by the people to return to power under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, I am confident more can be done for the people and country," he said, adding that he was proud that the state government was "politically stable" and had done well in terms of education, welfare and investment.

He added that most of the pledges had been fulfilled and urged the people to exercise their rights to vote wisely.

On the dissolution of Pahang assembly, Adnan said he had an audience with the state ruler Sultan Ahmad Shah at Istana Mahkota, who had given his consent, ahead of its automatic dissolution on April 7.

"The ruler expressed his hope to see a smooth election process without any untoward incident.

"The royal consent will pave the way to synchronise with the dissolution of the Parliament as announced by Prime Minister," he said.

Adnan said all the necessary documentation related to the dissolution had been prepared and the state assembly speaker would notify the Elections Commission before it was gazetted officially.

GE13: PAS’ candidates list awaiting HQ’s approval

Posted: 05 Apr 2013 06:29 PM PDT

TEMERLOH: The list of candidates for Pahang PAS is ready and will be announced once approval is obtained from the central leadership.

State PAS commissioner Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the list had been endorsed by the state leadership and submitted to the party's headquarters.

"It is up to the central leadership to make any last minute changes.

"For this coming elections, there would be at least 40% new faces contesting in six parliamentary and 21 state seats allotted to the party," he told StarMetro.

Tuan Ibrahim said however, they would not be fielding any ustazah this time compared to the previous elections.

In 2008, two women were fielded in Tahan and Luit state seats but both of them lost to Barisan Nasional candidates.

Tuan Ibrahim said the party had more than enough candidates with religious credentials as well as professionals to contest against Barisan.

"Our target is to win three parliaments and an additional 10 state seats, besides retaining Kuala Semantan and Beserah which we won in the last elections," he said.

New faces are likely to be fielded in Pulau Tawar, Inderapura, Luit, Kerdau, Sungai Lembing and Chenor.

Tuan Ibrahim said incumbent Kuala Semantan assemblyman Syed Hamid Syed Mohamed would be defending his seat while a new candidate would replace Beserah assemblyman Syed Mohammed Tuan Lonnik at the latter's request.

"I should be re-contesting in Jengka which I lost by 596 votes, subject to approval from the party's leaders," he said.

Other senior party leaders contesting in the state include Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi in Temerloh, Dr Hamzah Jaafar in Jerantut and Yusof Embong in Panching.

On swapping of seats, Tuan Ibrahim said PAS would be contesting the Temerloh parliamentary and Dong state seat for this elections.

In exchange, PKR would be given the Bera parliamentary and Batu Talam state seat which were contested by PAS in 2008.

Tuan Ibrahim said its machinery was ready and would hit the campaign trail after the official announcement of its candidates.

"Our target are new and young voters, as well as the second generation of Felda settlers and fence-sitters.

"Among the issues to be highlighted are housing woes and future uncertainties for the second generation of settlers," he said, adding that copies of the Pakatan Rakyat manifesto would be printed and distributed during the campaigning period.

Pahang PAS will be contesting in six parliamentary seats namely Jerantut, Maran, Kuala Krau, Temerloh, Rompin and Lipis.

The state seats are Jelai, Padang Tengku, Dong, Tahan, Pulau Tawar, Beserah, Tanjung Lumpur, Indera-pura, Sungai Lembing, Panching, Pulau Manis, Peramu Jaya, Luit, Chenor, Kerdau, Jengka, Kuala Semantan, Pelangai, Guai, Bukit Ibam and Tioman.

Communities urged to clear mosquito-breeding grounds

Posted: 05 Apr 2013 04:05 PM PDT

MUAR: All local government authorities in Johor have been urged to organise a gotong-royong with the people to clean up mosquito-breeding grounds after six deaths from dengue fever were recorded thus far this year.

State Women, Family, Health and Community Development Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said all the deaths happened in housing schemes in Johor Baru.

Dr Robia said the victims were four women, including a mother and daughter in Kampung Datuk Sulaiman Menteri, and two men.

It seems that Johor, with six deaths from dengue fever this year, is among the four dirtiest states in the country.

The other states are Perak, Sabah and Sarawak, which recorded one death each this year, she said here recently.

Dr Robia said the mother, aged 43, died on March 16 while the daughter, aged 15, died one day earlier, adding that both died at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru.

She said the victims had sought treatment at the clinics for fever but the doctors did not take their blood samples to check whether they were suffering from dengue fever.

She said when their fever worsened, the doctors asked them to go to the hospital but by then it was too late.

She said those who suffered from any fever or severe muscular ache should insist for their blood to be tested as they could be suffering from dengue fever.

Dr Robia said Johor recorded some 468 cases of dengue fever this year with 68% of them in Johor Baru, while Kulaijaya recorded 11%.

She said Kota Tinggi and Batu Pahat recorded 4% while Segamat three precent and Muar, Keluang and Ledang recorded 2%.

"We have no death cases from dengue fever recorded last year but this year we already have six deaths in three months.

"We want the local authorities and the people, especially at housing schemes in town areas, to clean up their surroundings," she said.

They must get rid of every mosquito-breeding ground in their respective areas, she added.
