No politicking in mosques, says Pahang crown prince Posted: 04 Mar 2013 10:42 PM PST KUANTAN: The Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah issued a stern warning to politicians and their campaigners to stay away from mosques and surau during the period of general election. "I have noticed that political talk has heated up here and there. "However, mosques and surau should not be used for any political activities or political games," said Tengku Abdullah. "The mosques are centres of unity for the community and for Islamic religious activities. "Muslims should know better on how mosques function and how they should be used," the crown prince said at the presentation of cheques to committees of well-cared mosques in the state at the MS Garden Hotel here. Tengku Abdullah said to ensure their sanctity and sacredness as well as to maintain unity among Muslims, it was advisable to stop political elements from creeping intoplaces of worship. "Political differences should not be a reason for Muslims to split. "Everyone has their view and political stand, which is normal, but they have to be matured enough to know the difference between political beliefs and unity," Tengku Abdullah added. "Please, bear in mind that the function of the mosque is not merely as a place to pray in. "It is to be used for other religious matters, including for providing classes on religious knowledge. "It has wide ranging functions, based on positive values," he said. |
Health Ministry to kick-off anti-obesity campaign nationwide Posted: 04 Mar 2013 09:34 PM PST BENTONG: The Health Ministry will embark on a nationwide campaign this year to address the increasing problem of obesity. Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said obesity was getting serious resulting in a deteriorating health condition among the people. "Malaysia is at the top spot among the Asean countries and at number six in the Asia Pacific region. "The wide choices of food available contribute to the problem of overweight among Malaysians which if left unchecked, might cause an increase in non-communicable illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes and heart ailments," he said after attending a tree planting programme at the Cure and Care Service Centre in Mempaga 3 near here. Liow, who is also the Bentong MP, said new hospitals, health clinics, Klinik Rakyat 1Malaysia and mobile clinics were among the facilities constructed and introduced to provide better healthcare services to the people. He said every year, the budget allocated for health services showed an increase so that the people living in rural and urban areas could enjoy quality services. "However, statistics showed the quality of health among the general public was on the decline with many afflicted with lifestyle diseases and other chronic illnesses. "As such, the people must practice a good habit by eating moderately, exercise regularly and against indulging in unhealthy activities such as smoking and drinking excessively," he said. |
Posted: 04 Mar 2013 09:46 PM PST KUANTAN: At least two seats in the state will be swapped among Barisan Nasional component parties in the coming 13th general election, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said. Adnan said he could confirm there would be "some changes" but it was still premature to reveal the seats involved. "The distribution of seats to be contested among Barisan component parties is up to the central leadership. "However, there would not be major changes compared to the last general election. "If Umno is not confident of winning, there is no point to nominate a candidate from the party. "If MIC stands a good chance, we would give our support," he said after launching the 1Malaysia Coalition gathering here. Adnan said the seat exchange was a normal process to ensure victory for Barisan in all the 14 parliamentary and 42 state seats. He expressed confidence in that there would not be any internal problem as all component parties in the state shared a close working relationship. "We can win all the parliamentary seats and with the right candidates, wrest back the lost state seats," he said. In the 2008 elections, Pahang lost the Kuantan and Indera Mahkota parliamentary and five state seats namely Beserah, Kuala Semantan, Tras, Triang and Tanah Rata. Political observers believe the Kuantan parliamentary and Tanah Rata state seat will see a swap. Kuantan is expected to be contested by Umno while a candidate from MCA is to be fielded in Tanah Rata. In the last general election, Kuantan was contested by a candidate from MCA (Datuk Fu Ah Kiow) representing Barisan, which was won by Fuziah Salleh of the PKR. Independent candidate Datuk Ho Yip Kap emerged victorious in a three-cornered fight in Tanah Rata - a seat traditionally alloted to the MCA - before his application to join Gerakan in 2010 was accepted. Despite Ho offering himself to defend the seat, MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai stood firm in his decision to field a candidate from the party. |
