MPSJ player Carlos Benjamin hopes to turn professional

Posted: 05 Mar 2013 03:53 AM PST

SUBANG Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) A footballer Carlos Benjamin Goonting started showing keen interest in football after his teacher convinced him to join the school team at the age of 10. He has never looked back since.

The former SK Sri Muda and SMK Seafield student admitted that playing in the District School Sports Council (MSSD), Selangor School Sports Council (MSSS) and Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) during his school days provided him with good experience.

Besides playing at grassroots level, the current Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP) student at Sunway University also achieved some great results playing in the higher level.

He developed his football skills with the Anak Kalumpang FC and Brazilian Football Club (BFC) in Subang Jaya before he earned his place in the Selangor Sukma squad line-up last year.

Despite settling as runner-up in the Nike The Chance programme in 2012, he is happy to have met competitors from all over the country through the event. He came in second behind Rahmat Che Hassim who was the winner of the Nike Chance Malaysia.

"The game was very demanding because national coach Ong Kim Swee was there to evaluate us based on our performance.

"I was one of the five winners in Malaysia and got to compete in Nike Chance SEA in Jakarta. Unfortunately, I was not selected for the Global Finals in Barcelona but it was a great experience at The Chance SEA in Jakarta," he added.

In 2011, he also had the privilege to go on a training stint in Porto Alegre, Brazil under the banner of BFC. They played six matches there and Carlos scored a total of four goals throughout the trip.

For Carlos, the best experience he had there was when the head coach from San Jose team invited him to train with them. Sadly, he needed to finish his studies in Malaysia.

Last year, Carlos donned the RioPardense FC stripes at Coimbra, Portugal.

Even though he did not score a single goal there, he managed to get an offer from the Brazilian team to train with them this June after he completes his studies.

During his stay in Portugal, he also had the chance to go for a trial with Anadia FC for two weeks.

"Playing in Portugal was the same as playing in Brazil. It was tough! In countries like that, you can find good players everywhere. So, everyone had to battle it out for a spot on the first team. Outstanding players were everywhere.

"Each game had a very high intensity and it brought out the best of myself every time. I wish I could go back there to play again someday," he said.

This year, Carlos is aiming to win the league with MPSJ A this season and hopefully be promoted to a higher league. He has consistently been on the first team for MPSJ since he joined in December 2012, playing as a right winger.

"If it is possible, I want to play professionally and even play in foreign leagues. I also want to thank my parents for the support they have given me from the start till now," said Carlos.
