Tan reminds locals to take opportunities due to boom in developments Posted: 29 Mar 2013 05:44 PM PDT JOHOR BARU: Locals must be ready to grab opportunities here due to the boom in developments in Johor. This is to ensure that they are not left behind said state exco member Tan Kok Hong. He pointed out that many foreigners including Singaporeans want to make Johor their new home due to the many housing projects that was quite affordable for them and various mega projects state wide that had changed the landscape drastically here. Tan, who is the state International Trade, Industry, Energy, Water, Communications and Environment Committee chairman, said besides Singaporeans, those from Japan, South Korea and European countries were also making Johor Baru and Pasir Gudang their new homes. "However the state government only allows housing developers to sell 20% of their housing project to foreigners with a ceiling price of RM500,000," he said. Tan also said with the ongoing developments in the state due to the Iskandar Malaysia and the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) project in Pengerang, it would attract more foreigners to come to Johor. "With the high-speed rail link project that will cut travelling time between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to just 90 minutes, Johor is expected to benefit the most. "Excitement is already growing not only among Singaporeans and Malaysians about the train but also from multinational companies that want to invest in the country especially in Johor," he said. Tan said this to pressmen after officiating Dynasty View Sdn Bhd latest housing project at Seri Austin Hills here recently. He also said that many foreign owned companies including Singapore companies preferred to invest in the state due to the low cost of living, better connectivity and good infrastructure including international schools and foreign universities in Nusajaya. "This is actually a good time for locals to also buy properties here to invest or set up new businesses. "Locals should not be scared of the ever increasing number of expatriates but must see it as a business opportunity for them," he said. |
Parents of dead infant can exercise rights to file a civil suit Posted: 29 Mar 2013 06:06 PM PDT BENTONG: A couple who lost their newborn baby girl under "unexplained circumstances" have several options to consider including seeking legal recourse. Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the girl's parents could exercise their rights to file a civil suit against the private hospital. "Personally, I have no objection if they decide to seek legal recourse against the parties involved. "It is within their rights to take appropriate action as they see fit," he said after meeting the couple in Wisma MCA here recently. Liow, who is the Bentong MP, said his ministry had conducted an initial investigation on the incident. He said they had interviewed several staff to find out the events leading to the death of the infant. "A more thorough probe would be carried out before a final report is compiled. "We would release the preliminary findings to the parents in due course," he said, adding that there would not be any attempts to cover up if negligence was involved. The girl's mother Susan Lim, 30, said the matter had been dragging on for too long. Lim said it had been almost nine months since her daughter passed away without a proper explanation. "We hope to put the episode behind us and move on with our lives," she said. On June 10 last year, Lim had given birth to a healthy baby girl via caesarian section at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur. However, in the early morning of June 18, a hospital staff informed Lim that her baby girl was in a critical condition. She was put on drips and hooked on a ventilation system at the intensive care unit before being declared "brain dead." On June 29 at about 11pm, the baby girl died without regaining consciousness. Since then, Lim and her husband Thong Thin Loon, 39, had yet to receive a satisfactory explanation which led to her untimely death. |
