MPAJ to discuss with Taman Seraya folk on safety of illegal construction

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 05:19 AM PDT

THE Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) will try again to engage residents involved in the construction of an illegal 81m wall in Taman Seraya in order to determine its safety.

Council deputy president Abd Hamid Hussain said the three residents involved in its construction were sent letters inviting them to a meeting at MPAJ.

"The wall is located along a road and we understand it was built for safety reasons.

"We would like to go through any documents and information available regarding the wall before making a decision on our next course of action," he said.

The wall was built last year at the end of Jalan Bunga Melati 3.

The matter was tabled in the council's full board meeting yesterday.

In the meeting, councillor Dorothy Cheong raised the issue of an outsider acting on behalf of MPAJ to speak with the residents.

"He offered help but did not specify what. I expect MPAJ to handle this matter in a professional way in future," she said.

She also asked why only these three residents were targetted.

"A similar wall was built in the vicinity seven years ago. Why hasn't anything been done about it?" she said.

She also claimed that the residents had been threatened and were afraid to attend the meeting.

Hamid clarified that the man had volunteered to speak to the residents.

"He is from the Taman Muda Traders' Association and is able to speak several Chinese dialects fluently. He called us to let us know he wanted to help," Hamid said.

He added that they were now taking action due to complaints from certain parties.

He also said they would invite Cheong to the next Infrastructure and Public Facility Committee meeting so that she could share any relevant information.

Councillor Supiramany Sinnapayal said residents should respect the authorities and work together with MPAJ to get the construction of the wall legalised.

On a separate issue, Hamid said MPAJ had removed more than 5,000 political party flags in Ampang.

"Under the election by-laws, these flags cannot be attached to public property or cause obstruction of signage.

"When this happens, and we receive complaints about it, we will remove the flags," he said, adding that the flags should stand on their own.

In Ampang, putting up flags is allowed for a period of two days before and after any political event.

"These days, there are many such activities, so we let the flags be," he said.

He added that some of the flags were placed in locations that made them hard to remove.

Hamid also said MPAJ would look into the report of a Rukun Tetangga cabin in Pandan Indah that was being used as a political party's operation centre.

"This is not allowed and we will take the necessary action should this be true," he said.
