Government allocates RM60mil to repair accident-prone stretches

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 05:47 PM PST

KUANTAN: RM60mil has been allocated to repair and upgrade 114 stretches of roads around the country that are accident-prone.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Shaziman Abu Mansor said RM35mil of the total sum was an additional allocation announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Shaziman said the other RM25mil would be used to upgrade roads in about 50 areas.

He said the works would kick-off in the first week of next month including in Sabah and Sarawak.

"At the Cabinet meeting last week, our PM was briefed on the latest data of the number of road accidents. It showed a marginal drop," Shaziman said after launching the third round of the Pahang state-level of the federal road maintenance at Komplek Tun Razak here.

Shaziman said between 2009 and 2011, there were 172 spots that were repaired at a cost of RM74mil.

He said the repaired roads offered comfort to motorists.

"For example, the federal road at KM352, Jalan Raub-Kuala Lipis which had recorded a total of 13 accidents before repairs in 2010, saw no accidents after the upgrading of the roads."

Shaziman said the repairing of the roads would take between four and five months.

He also said the road repairing works have been taken over by the small scale contractors whose works were up to the mark.

New industrial park to boost Kuantan’s economy

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 05:48 PM PST

KUANTAN: Kuantan will undergo a great transformation this year with the setting up of the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP), said MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said the park would not only bring about employment opportunities but also boost economic growth in the town.

"The year 2013 is going to be a good year.

"Chinese investors recognise the viability of Kuantan port and have agreed to cooperate with us immediately," said Liow at a Chinese New Year carnival here recently.

He said this was all made possible under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Liow urged the people to continue supporting Najib for continuous economic growth.

Also present at the event were Semambu assemblyman Datuk Pang Tsu Ming, Teruntum assemblyman Datuk Chang Hong Seong, Indera Mahkota MCA division deputy chairman Datuk Jack How and party chiefs.

Meanwhile, Pang, who is also the Indera Mahkota MCA chairman, said Pakatan Rakyat leaders were more interested in votes than serving the people.

"During the massive flood in December last year, did your MP come to meet you? He did show up but not to look into your troubles. Instead it is only to fish for votes.

"Meanwhile, Chang and I worked to get aid for flood victims to ease their financial burdens," he said.

The Indera Mahkota parliamentary seat is currently held by PKR MP Azan Ismail.

Pang also lambasted Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh for opposing the Lynas rare earth refinery project in the media but not in Parliament.

"When the parliamentary select committee's Lynas report came up for debate, Fuziah was nowhere to be found. She was in London for a study visit on elections.

"Is the general election more important for her rather than the issues faced by the people?" said Pang.

Liow and the MCA leaders later handed out goodie bags to the crowd before ending the evening by watching a fireworks show.

Two couples tie knot on Valentine’s Day

Posted: 18 Feb 2013 05:49 PM PST

JOHOR BARU: Neither the fact that their husbands were younger nor the belief that according to the Chinese calendar, Feb 14 was not a auspicious day, could stop two couples from exchanging their marital vows on Valentine's Day.

After four years of courting and maintaining a distant relationship, couple Tan Po Lee, 38 and Teoh Guan Seng, 33 decided to exchange their vows on Valentine's Day.

The happy couple were all dressed up in their traditional attire during a simple morning ceremony at the Hock Lin Chinese Temple in Taman Daya here.

"Although we cherish our love and celebrate it as if every day is Valentine's Day, we believe that marrying today would make our big day even more memorable.

"We met through a mutual friend some four years ago in Kuala Lumpur and at that time I was working in Johor while he was there," Tan said adding that they went on as a couple despite the distance.

Teoh said that barely two months after he moved to Johor Baru to be with Tan last year, the latter who works as a regional manager was transferred to Kuala Lumpur instead.

"We finally made it, and I cannot wait for her to move back to Johor Baru so we can spend the rest of our lives together," said Teoh, a mechanic.

Tan, who is five years senior to Teoh, added that her husband's age did bother her in the beginning, but after getting to know Teoh, his character and maturity attracted her.

Couples Siew Too Mei, 26, and Goh Wee Kiat, 24, both sales executives, got to know each other while working with the same company.

Over a year and a half later, the couple decided to take the plunge and get married on their second Valentine's Day celebration together.

"Last year's Valentine's Day was very special for us, as we had spent the whole day together, and we decided to tie the knot this Valentine's so that we may spend the rest of our lives together," said Siew.

Goh recalled that on the day he proposed, he was so nervous, but somehow found the guts to go down on one knee and ask Siew for her hand in marriage.

"We love each other, and so the age and some Chinese beliefs will not deter us from making this our memorable day," he said as he smiled at his new bride.
