University expands into China for energy efficiency research programme

KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has expanded into China by venturing into energy efficiency research in Dongguan.

The university inked a deal with a Chinese firm - Centro Ecotech (CE) Energy Technology (Dongguan) Co. Ltd for the setting up of a research lab in the city located in the southern Guangdong province.

The signing was done between UMS Vice Chancellor Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd Harun Abdullah and CE Co. Ltd chairman Chen Bing Guang in Dongguan on Dec 22.

Mohd Harun said this collaboration and the setting up of a research lab would help in the better understanding of green technology research and development.

This initiative also supports the university's vision and mission of implementing sustainable environmental friendly energy and natural resources in and out of the campus, he said.

According to the agreement, both parties would also work together to develop the energy efficient cleanroom control and create an automated building system, as well as exchange of ideas and knowledge pertaining to this field.

Meanwhile, another letter of intent was signed between UMS and the Graduate School at Shenzhen Campus, Tsing Hua University during a visit to the campus on Dec 24.

This signing will see both institutes collaborate on science and engineering, thus further strengthening the diplomatic bonds between Malaysia and China.

UMS officials had also earlier on suggested for a Tsinghua marine science research centre to be established in UMS, as well as strengthening collaborative research for green technology development between both parties.

New Year babies joy for families

JOHOR BARU: Administrative executive Koh Geok Kim was all smiles after giving birth to her third child on New Year's day as she had not expected to go into labour the night before.

She believed that her newborn baby girl could not wait to see her parent and siblings.

Koh pointed out that she had wanted to give birth on Jan 1, 2013 instead on Dec 31.

"Initially I have planned to give birth via Caesarean section on New Year's day, however my water broke the night before New Year and I gave birth naturally," said the 32-year-old.

Koh, who believed that her 3.40kg baby girl is a lucky child, added she was born a healthy baby at 5.31am.

Another mother Bong Chiou Ping, 33, said that she had planned to deliver on New Year's day as her husband believe it to be a special and memorable date.

"I went through Caesarean because my husband and I taught it would be an easy date to remember and it would be special for my baby to be born on the first day of the year," she added.

Bong was delighted to be mother of two beautiful girls as she gave birth to her second healthy baby girl weighing 2.72kg at 9.15am.

KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital's public relation executive Shariffah Alia Syed Abdul Rahman said that four New Year's babies were born at the hospital.

"In total three babies were born while the hospital is also waiting another baby to be born before Jan 2," she said.

A total of 41 New Year babies were born in four different hospitals here in the city, Puteri Specialist Hospital (six), Sultanah Aminah Hospital (12) as well as Sultan Ismail Hospital (19).

SCCS brings cheer to cancer patients

KOTA KINABALU: Cancer patients at the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital day care centre were all smiles when they received a year-end party from the Sabah Children's Cancer Society (SCCS).

Members and volunteers of the association gave goodies to the children and sang them Christmas carols, as well as celebrated the birthday of one of the boys there.

Despite their illness, the children still participated in the singing and some simple games organised by the volunteers.

Parents and relatives of the patients were also very willing to join in all the fun.

SCCS which was officially launched by the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital director Dr Tan Bee Hwai on May 19 last year, focuses on reducing the stress of cancer patients and their family members.

It was also established to promote research and public education in the prevention, control, diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer.

The society initially founded by a group of parents whose children were under treatment in the hospital was earlier known "Kelab Sokongan Ibubapa Onkologi Kanak-Kanak" (KIBO).

SCCS is now chaired by Datin Betty Pedro whereas its committee consists of parents of children with cancer and volunteers.

The society's medical adviser is Dr Ong Eng-Joe, the Paediatric Hemato-oncologist at the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital.

Among activities that have been carried out included a Dental Check-up and workshop for both parents and children in May.

A visit to the Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, and other birthday parties and festive celebrations were held during the second half of last year.
