Mall’s RM1.5mil ‘grand piano’ staircase ‘sings’ when stepped on Posted: 03 Jan 2013 04:35 AM PST Those who have been to Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur might know that the mall has three main sections — east, west and central wings. The lower ground floor of the central wing, which is the centre of the mall, is called the Lower Ground Concourse. Before this, visitors who wanted to traverse between the lower ground floor via the ground floor of the central wing had to walk over to either of the two side wings and take an escalator down. With numerous visitors coming in daily, Berjaya Times Square recognises the growing traffic between these two floors and has built its first Grand Musical Staircase. Unveiled recently, the Grand Musical Staircase is vibrantly lit in dancing LED sound graphs and designed to resemble a classical piano keyboard down to its actual chords. This larger-than-life piano does not only feature its normal piano sound, but also the sounds of a harp, percussion and flute. Nestled amidst the grandeur of its design and state-of-the-art technology, the landing area of the staircase on Lower Ground Concourse is installed with liquid panels that produce ripples with every footstep. It is also bespangled with fibre optic lights and zen-like steps which greet visitors at the Lower Ground Floor. The staircase is designed to give shoppers the illusion of walking on a sea of stars. The mall management hopes that by adding an idea of 'fun' to a mundane act, like walking up or down a flight of stairs, they can subtly coax their shoppers into a healthier lifestyle. Not to mention the pure novelty of walking on a giant piano, especially for the younger ones whose eyes light up when they realise there is a giant piano staircase in the mall. The Grand Musical Staircase took a little more than 13 weeks to construct, costing RM1.5mil. As the Lower Ground Concourse is used primarily for staged events, the landing area is built to allow an extension for an elevated platform akin to international catwalks and stages. The management has also configured several staging options which will appeal to event organisers and possibly attract a new demographic of shoppers. |
