TEMERLOH: A cyber cafe outlet offering gambling activities was closed down after police got wind of its operations and raided the premises.

A team of seven officers, led by Mentakab police station chief Insp Rizal Mohd Dan, raided the premises in Taman Sri Layang, Mentakab and detained two suspects including a patron for questioning.

"A total of 30 computer sets were seized to facilitate investigations under Section 4B(a) of the Common House Gambling Act 1953, which carries a minimum fine of RM10,000 for each machine seized or up to five years in prison.

"Investigations would also be carried out under Section 4(1)(b) of the Entertainment Enactment 1993 against the owner of the premises," he said.

Insp Rizal said police had earlier in the day received a public tip-off and deployed several personnel to stake out the premise.

He said however, it was found to be closed but the caretaker decided to open for business later the same evening.

"We would continue to combat the menace and prevent more such outlets from flourishing," he said.

It is learnt some 100 such outlets were operating in the guise of cyber cafes around Temerloh and Mentakab.

Meanwhile, a group of residents staged a peaceful demonstration urging the authorities to take stern action against such operators.

They urged the police to close down all the outlets operating in Taman Rimba and Taman Sri Layang as it could result in moral decadence, addiction and other social ills.
