Rikigoro all raring to go

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 05:41 AM PST

NATIONAL top ranked boys' Junior Elite (16 to 19 years) triathlete Rikigoro Shinozuka is hoping to get off the blocks on the right foot this season.

The promising talent aims to begin his campaign featuring at the Geelong International Triathlon Union (ITU) Sprint Oceania Cup in Australia on Feb 9 and 10.

Rikigoro, who turned 18 on Sunday, said he has requested the national association to submit his entry for the Junior Elite category contested over the sprint distance of 750m swim followed by 20km cycle and final leg of 5km run.

"I am hoping that they will assist and give their approval to support my participation by signing me up for the upcoming event. The organisers will need the national association to endorse my participation. It will be great to get a definite answer from them early because I have to make my own travel arrangements for the trip," he added.

Last year, he registered a personal best of 1'04:10 and finished as the runner-up in the sprint event of the men's 14 to 25 at the Port Dickson International Triathlon.

He also clocked 1'06:08 and settled for second in the men's 16 to 39 years sprint at the Desaru International Triathlon last season.

In wrapping up his previous season, he took a brief two-week break after the Subic Bay ASTC Duathlon Asian Championships in the Philippines at the end of November.

It was a satisfying outing for Rikigoro when he completed the 5km run-20km cycle-2.5km run in 1'00:50 to finish eighth in a field of 24 competitors in the boys' junior category.

Rikigoro said he was in a relaxed mood when he emerged as the champion in the boys' 16 and 17 years category at the Phuket IronKids in Thailand in early December last year.

"I resumed training in mid-December. Currently, I am still finding my rhythm to get back at my best. I am continuing to maintain the 20-hour training routine each week but I will be increasing the intensity this year. I have laid the foundation when I started training full-time last year. Building the strong fundamentals was an important injury-prevention phase before stepping up the pace in training. Besides working on my speed-endurance, I will have to acquire the race fitness temperament by following the race preparation training programmes," he added.

For the new season, Rikigoro is planning to take part in more high-level international races in his bid to make a serious attempt to qualify for the world junior championships held in conjunction with the grand finals of the ITU world triathlon series scheduled in London from Sept 11 to 16.

"It is going to be a great learning curve gauging my strength against my peers in a competitive environment. Besides the local competitions, I am excited about the opportunities to compete in different and unknown environment, tackling various challenging courses in the international meets. I am also considering to make my debut appearance at the longer Olympic distance event this year," said Rikigoro, adding that his immediate target was to cross the finish line within an hour in the sprint event.

Rikigoro is also applying for an education scholarship to pursue his A-level at Malaysia's Epsom College at Bandar Enstek in Sepang.

"I am applying for entry at Epsom because they are offering the design and technology subject for A-level. The campus also has excellent facilities and the calm surroundings around the college is just perfect for me to train outdoors.

"It is going to be interesting to go back to school after taking almost two-year of gap year. I will need to manage my time well to strike a balance between studies and training," he said.
