KUANTAN: The authorities have identified five areas in Kuantan which are susceptible to dengue fever in view of the present rainy season.

Pahang Health, Local Governmn-ent and Environment Committee chairman, Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, said the five areas were Ind- era Mahkota, Kubang Buaya, Cenderawasih, Jalan Haji Ahmad/Sekilau and Alor Akar.

"We urge residents in these areas to be more vigilant and ensure their homes and surroundings are free of mosquito breeding grounds.

"Due to the wet season, rainwater may accumulate and provide a conducive environment for mosquitoes to multiply," he told a press conference at his office here.

Also present was Semambu assemblyman, Datuk Pang Tsu Ming.

Hoh, who is the Bilut assemblyman, said due to the recent floods in Kuantan, seven cases of dengue fever was recorded in Peramu in less than one week.

He said the public should co-operate and carry out gotong-royong activities with the authorities to clean up the surroundings regularly.

"So far, only 296 gotong-royong programmes have been conducted statewide but more should be carried out.

"In terms of Combi monitoring teams, there are 71 active squads and we hope more will be set up in all housing estates in the state," he said, adding that Kuantan would host the national-level Combi convention in May this year.

Hoh said statistics in 2011 showed there were 894 dengue fever cases recorded with one death.

In comparison, he said there was a drop of 28.3% in number of cases last year to 641 cases with one death.

"Kuantan recorded the highest number of cases with 404, followed by Temerloh (74), Maran (34), Bentong (28), Pekan (27), Rompin (22), Bera (20), Jerantut (16), Lipis (11), Raub (four) and Cameron Highlands (one).

"A total of 860,791 fogging activities were carried out while 321,289 premises were inspected by the authorities," he said.

Hoh said for the whole of last year, a total of 1,960 compounds were issued after larvaes were detected in the premises.

‘Evil twin’ racks up traffic offences in Kuantan

JOHOR BARU: A 57-year-old seafood product business owner was puzzled when she received parking and traffic summonses from the Kuantan Municipal Council and the police when she has never been there before.

Lim Qwee Ding said she received several letters from the council relating to the offences which were committed in Kuantan between March and October last year.

"I was surprised to receive the summonses as well as a picture of the car which was caught on the police speed trap along the Sg Ular bypass.

"I own a silver colour Mercedez Benz and the car in the picture was a similar model with the same number plate but it was black in colour," she said.

Lim was speaking to reporters during a press conference organis-ed by Gelang Patah MCA divisi- on chief Jason Teoh yesterday.

The mother-of-one said she and her husband only travelled betwe-en Johor Baru and Kuala Lumpur for business and were both in Johor during the time of the suppo- sed offences as stated in the summonses.

"The first time I received a letter pertaining to a summons for the car was in June last year and I quickly lodged a police report," she said adding that she thought the problem was solved but received another summons in November last year.

Lim added that she refused to pay the summonses totalling to RM60 and the traffic summons issued under Section 115 of the Road Transport Act for exceeding the speed limit, as those were offences that she did not commit.

"I hope the authorities will take action against the person who duplicated my car number plate.

"I do not want them to misuse the car for criminal activities wh-ich could lead to problems for me," she said.

Lim added that she had also lodged a report with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) but they had no jurisdiction over the matter pending police investigations.

Meanwhile, during the press conference, Teoh said that he would assist the couple in the matter by writing to the police, Public Complaints Bureau as well as to JPJ.

Johor Baru north acting OCPD Supt Beh Eng Lai, when contacted, said that the matter was being investigated and would seek assistance from the Kuantan police to look for the car.

All residential premises, he said, were required to use the bins in order to improve efficiency in waste collection.

"The bins that were fitted with wheels and will help solve problems such as frequent damage and it being raided by animals.
