Age of style and substance

Malaysian men and mode are no longer an awkward combination.

IS it just me or have my fellow males in this country become wiser and more au courant in presenting their outer shell and overall image?

Well maybe this doesn't apply to the majority of Malaysian males, but it is evident in most of the younger generation of guys today. But Malaysian men and mode have come a long way.

From my understanding, the only fashionable Malaysian men, sometime back, were the celebrities. And for the fashionable men who were not in the limelight, they were often perceived as being "unconventional", "Wester-nised" or even "homosexual" by many.

Meanwhile, teenagers back then who dressed up usually belonged to a certain group such as hip hop, gothic, punk and so on were thought as fashion pundits and did not do any justice to the real meaning of being fashionable.

Today, we are seeing a new scenario in Malaysia, literally. More men are putting greater effort in the style department.

Wherever you are, be it at the club or at work, you will see men who are stylish in their own way. They are not afraid to wear bright colours, statement accessories and trendy shoes in the name of fashion and fun.

Of course, there are still those who judge these stylish men.

Maybe these disapproving individuals have not seen or heard anything about metrosexuals such as David Beckham, Justin Timberlake, Cristiano Ronaldo, Brad Pitt or even James Bond.

But it is not only celebrities, sportsmen or fictional characters who are stylish. Modern-day politicians, namely British Prime Minister David Cameron, US President Barack Obama and our very own Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, are jumping on the style bandwagon.

International brandnames have noticed the growing fashion awareness among Malaysian men, seeing this as a great opportunity for investment.

More and more fashion labels are opening their stores here to cater to the growing needs of these fashion-conscious men.

Over the last five years, we have also been able to see more magazines that focus on men's fashion and lifestyle at newsstands.

These developments reaffirm the idea that men's fashion has become more significant today.

I personally think that being well-groomed and fashionable is one of the key factors in today's world, in projecting an attractive persona and giving one the chance to enhance his or her best physical features.

I am quite sure some of you reading this may be of the opinion that how a gentleman dresses up does not matter as long as he possesses substance.

Yes, my fellow blokes, this is true, but we men can have substance and style at the same time — who knows, it may create more personal and career opportunities for you.

Tennis legend Arthur Ashe once said, "Clothes and manners do not make the man, but when he is made, they greatly improve his appearance."

So gentlemen, men and fashion are no longer an awkward combination. You can now release the inner Cristiano Ronaldo or James Bond in you.

Get approval from Perhilitan first

BRINGING your pet snake out or leaving it in the care of a friend when you go on a holiday without a permit might land you in jail or with a fine.

Selangor Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) director Rahim Ahmad said under Section 60 (1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010, those possessing protected animals without a licence are liable to a maximum penalty of up to RM50,000 or jail term or both.

He advised the public to buy pet snakes from licensed pet shops.

"Using the sales receipt, register your pet with the Perhilitan office. The licence fee is RM10 a year.

"If you want to transfer the licence to another person, apply from us and provide a valid reason," he said, adding that Perhilitan must be informed when taking the pet snake out of the house.

"If you wish to put in under the care of a friend temporarily, you need to provide your friend's name, address and the period it will be in the care of that person," he said.

For details, call the Perhilitan Careline at 1-300-80-1010 between 8am and 12.30am (Monday to Sunday) or visit www.wildlife. gov.my, or refer to the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716) at www.wildlife.gov.my/images/stories/akta/Wildlife_Conservation_Act2010_Act716.pdf
