Checks by StarMetro revealed that many potholes had appeared in the last couple of weeks and were causing major traffic congestions especially along busy intersections and highways here. MBJB public relations officer Mohd Firdaus Abdul Hamid said the council was aware of the problem and were in the midst of rectifying the matter. "We have received numerous complaints from motorists and are doing our best to repair the damaged portions. "The occurrence of the potholes however are due to heavy vehicles such as lorries and tractors and the rainy season is only making things worse," he said when contacted. Mohd Firdaus said MBJB's engineering unit had surveyed with major potholes and damaged roads to find a proper solution on the matter. "It is a major concern to us as the potholes and damaged roads could also cause fatal accidents and risk the lives of motorists. "The council has allocated more than RM2mil to conduct major upgrading works for these roads and hopefully the works will be completed by January next year," he said. He added that among the locations which were significantly bad were the roads at Taman Perindustrian Tebrau II, Taman Daya, and along the Pasir Gudang Highway. Mohd Firdaus said these are major roads under its jurisdiction as the roads linked to highways such as the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) which directs traffic to the city centre. "The council also hopes that motorists will be patient during the upgrading works and we apologise for any inconvenience caused," he said. |

Snatch theives are now targeting men besides the elderly Posted: 31 Dec 2012 03:07 PM PST MALACCA: Malacca Historic City is creating a history of sort where even macho guys are falling prey to snatch thefts. Malacca Historic City (MBMB) councilllor Ronald Gan said the latest adverse development shows a new trend is emerging where snatch thieves were no longer targeting women and elderly folks in the city but have become more daring to prey on masculine men. The current trend necessitates a concerted effort from community leaders and police to thwart before this menace goes out of hand. The historic city is emerging as a hot bed for snatch thefts where the victims are no longer weaker sex and the frail citizens but also young man, he said when interviewed here, recently. Therefore, Gan said time has arrived for a war to be declared against snatch thefts and said previous victims should come forward to provide details to their respective leaders. These inputs, he said could be used by police and the council to install CCTVs at areas deemed hotspots, he said. Gan however, said most victims were unwilling to pursue their cases and only go to the extent of lodging police reports. "Only police reports now renders no use, as snatch thieves are becoming more brazen over the days. We need to teach these bunch of morons who are heartless and putting the lives of other in danger, and show that Malaccans are not cowed by their dastard act," he said. Gan said he has proposed to MBMB to install CCTVs at the hotspots and also dispatch council's enforcement officers to work closely with police in eliminating the escalating snatch thefts. "Police too needs to mount more roadblocks and get feedback from community leaders overseeing areas where such thefts rampantly occured," he said. Gan said that on Wednesday, three police reports were lodged on snatch thefts where two of the victims where men aged 30 and32, respectively. He said the other victim was a 55-year-old housewife who was preyed upon by a female snatch thief at Jalan Klebang Besar here at 10am.
