MINUTES before the Malakoff KL run was flagged off, Jessica Tang Mei Lee tripped and fell. She then ran to the first aid tent to get her wound treated.

Not knowing if she could perform as well as she had hoped, the 28-year-old skipped her way to the starting line.

"It's funny but I don't really remember how I fell. This is the first time such a thing has happened to me," said Tang who did not let injury affect her spirit.

The corporate strategy manager said she knew the task ahead of her that morning was not going to be an easy one, given the fact that the route for the Bukit Damansara race was a hilly one.

"Everyone ran so fast ahead as soon as the flag off," she said, adding that she only started pushing herself after the second kilometre.

With proper training, Tang maintained her pace well throughout the race to ensure she came back top in the women's open category ahead of Looi Mei Yan and Lynn Guan.

The men's open winner Lili Suhairi Md Yang Ghazali ran his best in the 12km race, returning with almost identical time as his result last year.

"Although this route is not new to me I felt it was a bit tougher today," said the 29-year-old who cited lack of training as a reason.

The swimming instructor said he was glad to find out that he completed the race in 43mins, similar to his result last year where he took the third spot.

However he was also quick to add that the race this time was tougher as he had to compete with national duathlete Shahrom Abdullah and Jothpal Singh who both gave a close fight to the finish line.

The men's veteran category went to Mark John Williams from Britain who ran the route in 43:01 while Khor Ngee Leong defended his title in the men's senior veteran group.

For the women's veteran category, Wong Siew Seng (57:05) emerged as the winner while Briton Julie Foreman grabbed the women's senior veteran title in 52:47.

The annual Malakoff race which also feature a 7km race, attracted more than 3,000 runners this year at the Bukit Kiara Equestrian Centre.

The race, themed Run with Family and Friends, attracted runners of all ages.

Prize vouchers worth RM18,000 were given away to winners in the six competing categories.

Fun and feast for needy kids

Over 50 children from The Lighthouse Children's Home aged between three and 16 celebrated Christmas with a party at BSC, courtesy of Bandar Raya Developments Berhad (BRDB).

The Lighthouse Children's Home is an establishment that provides a safe, healthy and loving environment for underprivileged children under the age of 18, and is located in Bukit Pantai, Kuala Lumpur.

Upon arrival, the children were led to the Kids Floor at BSC to enjoy playtime with employees from BRDB.

The younger children were treated to fun and frolic in The Jungle Gym, an indoor amusement area. The older ones had an opportunity to try roller-blading at Roller Sports World, the first and largest inline skating centre in Asia.

Besides being a fun activity, inline skating was also a good test of their balance, flexibility and coordination skills.

A sumptuous afternoon tea spread awaited the children at the Stuff Your Face Cafe and the evening ended with them receiving Christmas presents from BRDB employees.

"We are extremely delighted to be given the opportunity to share the Christmas spirit and bring some festive joy to the children. The festive season is all about charity and what better way to share the spirit of giving than with innocent children who have endured so much of hardship at this young age.

"While the event is part of our corporate social responsibility efforts to the community, it more importantly ensures that the less fortunate are not left out on occasions and festivities such as these," said BRDB's assistant general manager of Communications Malathi Pillay.

"There's nothing more rewarding than to see the smiles on the faces of the children — it's simply priceless.

"We hope our contribution this afternoon will add to the joy and merriment of the festive season for these children."

Founder of The Lighthouse Children's Home Steven Silvaraju expressed his appreciation to BRDB for their support over the years.

"The kids have been treated to Christmas cheer at BSC for the past three years and each year is a truly memorable and fun experience. It is heartwarming to see corporate organisations reach out to the community and we hope that this is an initiative that is emulated by more organisations in the following years."
