Public urged to be careful of projects purportedly giving good returns

KUANTAN: The public especially retirees should be more cautious when investing their hard-earned money in projects purportedly giving good returns over a short-term period.

Teruntum assemblyman Datuk Chang Hong Seong said a retiree Chee Kong Hong, 54, from Tanah Putih Lama, approached him for assistance after investing an amount of RM30,786 to purchase a cow.

Chang said Chee had entered into a sale and purchase agreement in April last year with a breeding farm based in Johor and was supposed to receive payment of RM250 per calf and production of milk at a price of RM2 per litre.

"He was then issued with a certificate of ownership for a cow of the Friesian-Jersey breed complete with a tag number by the firm.

"However, there was no news from the firm since then, resulting in him having sleepless nights as he was not paid a single sen thus far," he said at Wisma MCA here.

Chang said he had tried on several occasions to contact the management of the breeding farm but could not get through.

He urged others who had invested in similar projects to verify the venture with the relevant authorities as soon as possible.

"I would write in to the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism Ministry and Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Ministry to check on the authenticity of such projects.

"There are just too many scams going on and it is better to exercise prudence than regret later," he said.

On another matter, Chang said he had received an e-mail from a bank requesting him to update his personal account details.

"The e-mail states that my online banking access will expire soon and requires me to validate my personal details, failing which my account will be suspended.

"When I contacted the bank, the officer said no such e-mail was sent out," he said, adding that he believed it was a scam by unscrupulous parties to pilfer information and subsequently, transfer money out from his bank account.

Chang said he also received four other dubious e-mails, one of which requested him to bank-in money to the account of a "friend" due to an emergency situation.

"I managed to send out an SMS to my friend who replied that he was not robbed overseas as claimed in his SOS e-mail.

"His account appears to be hacked by a third party and a mass SOS e-mail sent out to all his online friends asking for money," he said, adding that the people should be wary of such tactics to cheat money.

Chang said three other e-mails claimed he had won a United Kingdom lucky gold lottery worth 643,771.25 pounds, Coca-Cola Award worth $500,000 and a Fan Box accumulated daily earnings of $8.76 up to Nov 6.

He said in order to claim the purported winnings, a processing fees would be levied.

"I believe all these e-mails are scam being circulated by unscrupulous parties," he said, while urging the people to ignore such e-mails totally and the authorities would not be able to investigate as some might originate overseas.

KOTA KINABALU: Growing up in a challenging environment proved to be no hindrance for Azmannoransyafiq Herman who excelled in his Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR).

"I want to show my father who left our family few years ago that I can still succeed even without him," said the 16-year-old who achieved 8As in his PMR examination recently.

Azmannoransyafiq, the eldest in his family said although it was hard to go about their daily lives without the support from a father, it is certainly not an excuse for him to let his mother down.

"I proved myself and hope somewhere out there he (my father) knows how great we are doing by ourselves," he said.

Azmannoransyafiq also attributed his success to the moral support given by his mother and the study groups that he used to have prior to the PMR examination.

In this respect, Azmannoransyafiq's mother, Azimah Salleh, 42, said she was glad that her son did so well in his PMR examination, but she never doubted his abilities, as he was a very independent and hardworking student.

"Azmannoransyafiq would only go out and play or hang out with his friends after he finishes his homework," she said, adding it was not difficult to care for her three children as they were all very obedient.

"Although I'm a single mother doing odd jobs and farming, I still manage to see my children get basic school supplies and food from welfare aids as well as teachers, friends and families," she added.

Meanwhile, Sabah Education Director Datuk Dr Muhiddin Yusin said although the number of PMR candidates and the overall passing rate have declined this year, the state average grade showed a slight improvement from 3.03 to 3.01 point.

"The total number of candidates sitting for PMR also reduced from 37,714 in 2011 to 37,607 this year, bringing the number of straight A students dropping from 1,025 to 922 candidates this year," he said.

"However, we are glad to see the overall state average grade has improved by 0.02 points this year," he said.

The top three high PMR achieving schools in Sabah are SM Sains Lahad Datu with a state average grade of 1.08 point, followed by SM Sains Sabah and SMK Agama Tun Ahmad Shah with 1.14 and 1.62 point respectively.
