Cycling event gets ruler’s endorsement to commemorate his birthday

SOME 800 cyclists took part in the Kayuhan DiRaja Karnival Rakyat 2012 to commemorate state ruler Sultan Ahmad Shah Sultan Abu Bakar's birthday.

Participants from all over the country rode a distance of 40km around Kuantan from the Darul Makmur Stadium.

The Sultan and his royal family including Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob with state officials in attendance had flagged-off the cyclists.

Prior to the event, a tattoo team from the Army had also showcased their skills to the amazement of the crowd.

This was followed by a parade of classic bicycles by 20 participants including a ride-along with the Sultan on his bicycle.

Themed Raja dan Rakyat Berpisah Tiada, the event also attracted consumer goods exhibitors.

Following the success of the event, the Sultan said more of such events should be organised in all the districts in the state.

"It is up to the committee members of my birthday celebration headed by the Mentri Besar and Tengku Mahkota.

"We can do more by giving a chance to other districts to organise the Kayuhan DiRaja in their respective area," added Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Cycling activities in Pahang is a boost to the tourism sector with various events held throughout the state.

Some of the noteworthy events are the monthly leisure ride in Raub, Kuantan TC night ride, King of mountain race in Fraser's Hill and Cameron High-lands.

New decoration symbolises strength and greatness of Johor

MUAR: A new landmark to mark the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar's 54th birthday celebration here is now open to the public.

The landmark of four elephant tusks facing one another with a crown on top is also beautifully decorated with fountains and colourful lightings during the night.

The Johor Council of the Royal Court secretary Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli said the landmark was strategically located at a roundabout of Jalan Sulaiman, Jalan Arab, Jalan Khalidi and Jalan Ibrahim and Jalan Temenggong Ahmad.

He said since Johor was the first state in the peninsula which used the crown during a coronation ceremony for new Ruler, the state decided to put a crown on top the landmark.

"The landmark was built about two months ago under the supervision of the Public Works Department and cost more than RM1mil.

"It is also beautifully landscaped and has a pathway for people to walk and enjoy the beautiful landmark," he said recently.

Abdul Rahim said the elephant tusks were selected to show that Johor once had many elephants and other wild animals such as tigers.

He said the tusks and crown also symbolised great strength and position and were appropriately used to mark the greatness of Johor.

"We want the people to look after the cleanliness of the town which has been chosen to be the royal town of Johor.

"We also want the people to join in the celebration, which lasts for five days until Nov 26," he added.

New project at Kota Laksamana to preserve old Malacca structures

MALACCA: Malacca Government has insisted that the new project at Kota Laksamana here preserves the heritage designs of old Malacca structures.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the RM92mil Heritage City known as 'Porto Historia' will be a benchmark for other developers in the state to emulate when planning out their development projects in the future.

Porto Historia being constructed on a 1.9ha site fronting the Malacca River will witness the development of commercial hub consisting 55 units of three-storey shophouses.

The project is scheduled to be fully completed by November 2013.

Mohd Ali said Porto Historia was a joint venture project betweenstate-owned entrepreneur agency Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam, FinanceHouse Berhad and First Avenue Partners (Asia) Sdn Bhd.

"Most of the unit were sold even before completion and this reflect a high demand for such properties in historic city, he told reporters after the ground-breaking ceremony here on Monday.

Mohd Ali noted the architectural design emphasise on Malacca's heritage buildings to attract more tourists to the site.

He said Malaccas architects are a unique breed and has potential for new development to have the same design to preserve the historic value of the new structures adorning the city.

"We talk about preserving heritage building but it's important to maintain the earlier designs like those found in Jonker Street in the heart of the city, he said.

Mohd Ali said similar views are heard throughout Malacca's architectural community where they hopes state would make compulsory for future development to preserve the geometrical designs of the old buildings at their facades.

There is a preserving the pre-war building designs as we want thestructures to be distinct from others cities in the country, he said.

Mohd Ali said Malacca history is largely embedded in its architectural fabric and the design of heritage is an important element to be preserved in order to define the landmark within the urban area as well as boosting the tourism industry.
