Najib: Opposition twisting facts

Posted: 07 Oct 2012 05:52 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has labelled the Opposition as experts in twisting facts to turn a noble cause into a failure or even change the people's perception towards it.

He said the Opposition had zero credibility and they were only good at criticising, provoking, and making promises that cannot be fulfilled.

"The Opposition's criticisms should be constructive and not destructive," said Najib, who is also Umno president at the opening of Johor Umno delegates meeting here.

Examples of Opposition's baseless claims include Felda going bankrupt two years ago and also trying to prevent the conglomerate from being listed on Bursa Malaysia.

"Now they (Opposition) have started with the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex (Rapid), which will be the biggest investment in the country which will benefit many people with job opportunities," he said adding that he was told that the compensation for the project had gone into hundreds of thousands.

Najib added that in the first phase of compensation, at least 80% of those affected have accepted the compensation while 20%, who have been influenced by the opposition, have taken the matter to court.

Najib added that among the compensation offered to those affected include land, cash and new homes.

"Johor is expected to prosper with new investments that I will announce soon," he said adding that this investment would be bigger than Legoland Malaysia and Pinewood Studio in Nusajaya.

He added that the people wanted a brighter future with fewer uncertainties and so far Barisan Nasional has brought a lot of development and success to the country.

Najib also hit out at the Opposition for their disagreement on the implementation of hudud.

Drawing reference to the United Kingdom political system he said any Government should have a shadow cabinet if they want wrest control of the country (Putrajaya).

"Why are they afraid to unveil their shadow cabinet?" he said drawing laughter from the delegates when he mentions Lim Kit Siang to be Finance Minister, Karpal Singh as Law Minister and Mohamed Sabu as Women Minister.

He also urged the people to reject the Opposition and their manifesto as some of them have yet to be implemented after the last elections especially in Selangor.

Najib expressed confidence that Johor Umno would continue to be a pillar for the party in the upcoming general elections.

"We have to let the people know that Umno champions reforms and transformation in the country including being more democratic with its delegates," he said adding that there are no quota or limits for contesting top position in the party.

He also called on Umno members to close ranks and not to squabble among themselves and to support any candidate in the general election.

Litterbug campaign hits shoppers in Sutera Mall

Posted: 07 Oct 2012 05:53 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: Visitors at a shopping mall here was shocked to see a group of people wearing green coloured shirts holding banners and asking them to give them a high five as well as distributing trash bags.

The group however was not holding a demonstration but was carrying out a campaign, dubbed "Don't be a Litterbug" to create awareness on the importance of keeping the streets clean.

The Malaysian Plastics Forum (MPF) Johor branch chairman Lim Chun Yow said littering is a behavioural issue among many Malaysians.

"Many people blamed items such as plastic for causing the drains to be clogged or even the municipal councils for not taking preventive actions.

"But we must look at ourselves and asked if we should also take the blame for it," he said when met at the campaign held at Sutera Mall here recently.

Lim added that rubbish does not fall from the sky or appear on the streets magically but is a result of irresponsible parties.

"The campaign aims to address a common but harmful habit of Malaysians which is becoming a litterbug where people throw all sorts of stuff on the streets, in the drains and even into rivers.

"The Government spend millions of money to clean drains and rivers but this is a short time solution. However, educating the public would help in a long term," he said.

He added that the campaign, held together with social group Waterfall Survivors, see its members distributing trash bags to encourage the public to use it.

"We want to stop litterbugs from throwing their wastes and rubbish. It should be properly disposed or recycled," he said.

Lim added that this is the second time that MPF organised such a campaign after Kuala Lumpur on Aug 4 this year.

Residents worry of health safety

JOHOR BARU: Some residents in Taman Johor Jaya here are opposing the installation of a telecommunications tower within a school ground and near their homes.

Hawker Simon Sia, 40, said he was not aware of such a project until he noticed some contractors setting up the materials behind SK Taman Johor Jaya 2, near his home along Jalan Keembong 33 last week.

"When I found out that they were going to install the tower, I felt worried that it may pose health risks to the residents as well as schoolchildren in the area," he said during a press conference here recently.

The telecommunications tower was part of the government's plans to enhance highspeed broadband access or cellular phone coverage to benefit schools with better WiFi access.

Another resident, housewife Lim Ai Hwa, 42, said the residents are not against the development but would prefer for the tower to be built in a different location, further from residential areas.

"Although the project will benefit our children's education, at the same time we feel worried about our health and what the radioactive rays can do to us," she said.

Besides that, a housewife, who only wanted to be known as Choo, 55, said once completed, the tower would be directly in front of her house and would pose as an eyesore.

Meanwhile, Pasir Gudang PKR legal advisor Jimmy Puah, who organised the press conference, said he would help the residents to gather signatures for a petition.

"We will gather the signatures within 14 days to be handed to the respective authorities such as the local council, assemblyman and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to voice the residents' grouses.

"And if it is really safe and does not pose any health risks, we want the respective authorities to bring in experts to hold a dialogue session with the residents so that they fully understand the situation," he said.
