Saying something

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 02:30 AM PDT

An up-and-coming band gets a boost in the industry with the help of an iconic musician.

JUST when you think the music scene in Malaysia is going on a downward spiral, along comes veteran musician Datuk M. Nasir with a plan to try and make things good again, in the form of a new band.

Aryan Band is a six-piece band signed under M. Nasir's record label, Luncai Emas Sdn Bhd.

"It all started after I heard them sing. The band also made an impressive debut during its performance of Azura at the Anugerah Planet Muzik 2011 in Singapore. Then, I heard the band's compositions and I was impressed," said the award-winning composer.

Aryan Band has written songs for other artistes, too. Apart from the members' talents in singing and songwriting, M. Nasir was keen to sign them up because of their personalities.

"I still believe a new artiste has to have presence, if not a good personality. Somehow, whatever talent you have will still go hand-in-hand with good looks. That is still what the market is like," said M. Nasir during the launch of Aryan Band's new single, Kasih Katakan Sesuatu (Say Something Love) in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Though M. Nasir has high hopes that Aryan Band will make a mark in the music industry, he is quite sceptical about the unpredictable trend of music these days.

"All music genre has a phase, you don't know what will be the next craze. You just have to sit back and embrace all these phases. As a senior composer, I welcome all these changes because it will always evolve. I'm all for young musicians showcasing their talents," said the 55-year-old singer-songwriter.

According to M. Nasir, the current trend that is big in Malaysia now is "rock kapak" (sentimental rock).

"I really don't know how far or how long this craze is going to go on. But like all music genres, rock music will come full circle too just like pop yeh-yeh, sentimental or pop. So when it hits you, you just have to be appreciative of it," he said citing the meteoric rise of young singers like Indonesia's Apit and Malaysia's Najwa Latif.

He feels that no matter what genre of music is trendy, the most important thing is for the song to be sincere.

"The song could be so simple with no frills but if it is done sincerely, it will hit home. I find this in Aryan Band's songs. The boys have great potential," said the composer behind countless hits like Mentera Semerah Padi, Kekasih Awal Dan Akhir, Fantasia Bulan Madu and Sekuntum Mawar Merah.

He also observed that the current trend of downloading ring tones on cellphones or smartphones does not bode well for the music industry.

"People are not interested to know the arrangement of the songs anymore. They just go for the catchiest tune around, that's it," said M. Nasir who has seven recording artistes under Luncai Emas.

Perhaps as a way to keep up with this current culture, M. Nasir decided to include Aryan Band's new single as a ring tone on some of the mobile service providers.

Aryan Band was formed in September 2010 and includes guitarist Aryan Sani, Farid Yusof on vocals, Nash Ayemz on guitar, Reno Fendy on keyboards, Joey Black on bass and Mie Apache on drums. The band's forte is pop alternative. Bands like Creed, Muse, Linkin Park, Nickleback, Gigi and Search heavily influence Aryan Band's music. Before deciding on the name Aryan Band, close to 30 names were suggested to M. Nasir. Finally, the name "Aryan Band" struck the right chord with everyone.

"The name 'Aryan', in Sanskrit means great and of noble birth. And it so happened that a member of the group also has that name. I hope the group will live up to its name," M. Nasir explained.

Kasih Katakan Sesuatu is the band's third single, with the other two being Dirimu Tiada Ganti (You Are Irreplaceable) and Andai (If). Aryan Band is currently in the midst of recording its full album.

"We feel so lucky to be the second group to be signed up under Luncai Emas after Spider. We can't thank Datuk M. Nasir enough for putting so much trust in us. He has also been very supportive," said Reno.

For Aryan, the band is definitely a breath of fresh air because pop alternative is a new genre in the local music scene.

"We are very inspired when we see our song getting favourable response on YouTube. Hopefully, we will find a place in this music industry with the support of our fans," said Aryan.
