Malacca set up task force to thwart the increase in number of motorcycle thefts Posted: 22 Oct 2012 08:42 PM PDT MALACCA: Malacca police have voiced their concern over the skyrocketing cases of motorcycle thefts here and the involvement of students in such thefts. State CID chief Asst Comm Raja Sharom Raja Abdullah said 1,600 machines were reported stolen from Jan 1 to Oct 14 this year, compared with 1,261 cases for the corresponding period in 2011. As such there is an increase of 339 cases. "We have to admit that there is now a 27% increase in motorcycle thefts in the state and joint losses suffered by victims stood at a whopping RM4.8mil since early this year. "This figure tabulates to an average of five bikes stolen per day," he said recently. He noted that motorcycle thefts contributed to the increase of the total crime index registered in the state this year. ACP Raja Sharom said police found it hard to probe such thefts due to the quick moves by the thieves in cannibalising the stolen bikes at makeshift workshops in secluded areas. In most cases, he said, no one witnessed such thefts nor where the thefts recorded by CCTVs, making it difficult for police to track down the thieves. ACP Raja Sharom said most of the thefts were reported in housing estates and flats where the crimes took place when the owners were asleep. Hence, he said police have set-up a task force to thwart the number of motorcycle thefts in the state. He said the task force has managed to nab 47 individuals, aged between 13 and 40, while 12 of those detained were schoolboys. All of them will facilitate investigation under Section 379A of the Penal Code. ACP Raja Sharom urged residents associations to launch crime prevention measures to thwart motorcycle thefts in their respective areas. He added that police would also double up their effort to deter motorcycle thefts by increasing patrols and working closely with community leaders. |
Armed Forces have enough military doctors Posted: 22 Oct 2012 03:47 PM PDT MALACCA: The Malaysian Armed Forces have sufficient military doctors attending to medical needs of its personnel nationwide, said its chief Tan Sri Jen Zulkifeli Mohd Zin. "There are 560 doctors serving in army hospitals and clinics with another 355 doctors in the medical relief teams. "The numbers are sufficient at present," he told reporters after the closing ceremony of training session for army medical officers at Terendak Camp in Sungai Udang here, recently. Jen Zulkifeli said the Armed Forces constantly monitors its current pool of doctors from time to time to ensure the best medical services are given to its personnel and their family members. "Replacement would be done immediately whenever a doctor discontinues his service or if he is away on a mission or furthering his studies," he said. The ceremony saw a total of 27 medical officers including a dentist and a pharmacist completing their one-month training as military doctors. He also noted that the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM), which offers courses in Medicine and Defence Health, would also contribute to the need in the number of military doctors in the country whenever there are vacancies. |
