Petaling Perdana gymnasts stamp their supremacy in Mini Olympics

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 05:34 AM PDT

PETALING Perdana retained their top position in the girls' team event at the Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Mini Olympic artistic gymnastics championships at the Selangor Sports Council gymnasium in Seksyen 6, Shah Alam recently.

The foursome of Ameera Irdina, Serena Lee, Ng Jia Xin and Koay Mee Kee were part of the Petaling Perdana victorious line-up under the care of coach Kit Sin.

In the girls' Under-10 contest decided over four disciplines, the Petaling Perdana team accumulated a total score of 140.200 points from their performances in the floor exercise, balance beam, single bar and vault.

Petaling Perdana finished ahead of runners-up Petaling Utama (137.067) while Klang came in third (132.500).

Kit said they hoped to identify more emerging talents in the future.

"Although we will need to include new faces in the team next year, we are confident that promising gymnasts will come through and make an impact at the meet. We are very fortunate because there are many girls showing keen interest in vying for a place," she added.

En route to completing her campaign as the runner-up in the individual all-round standings, the seven-year-old Ameera from SK Seksyen 7, Shah Alam was the best performer in the individual events settling for second in balance beam, single bar and vault.

The trio of Serena, Jia Xin and Mee Kee are from Sri Kuala Lumpur.

"She (Ameera) has just joined our club training programme based at Sri Kuala Lumpur gymnasium in Subang Jaya three months ago. Even though she was not among the top three finishers in the floor exercise, she registered a respectable score in the event. She was very consistent in all four events," said Kit.

Klang stole the show with three gymnasts hogging the limelight in the girls' individual events.

The girls' individual overall champion Khairun Nabihah was also the winner in both the floor exercise and balance beam while her team mates Kay Bo Yee and Ng Rachel secured the top spot in the single bar and vault respectively.

Meanwhile, the boys from Petaling Perdana struggled in their tussle for supremacy finishing fifth in the team event comprising a total seven teams.

However, Cody Gabriel provided the joy for Petaling Perdana with his individual effort in the boys' competitions.

Total Gymnastique's newly appointed coach Jhony Romualdo from the Philippines, who kept a watchful eye on the Petaling Perdana boys, said they were banking on Cody to lead the side in doing well.

"We expected Cody to excel in the competition. He was our top entry. This year, he has progressed to go through the paces more frequently (three times a week) under one of our coaches Sam Thong," he added.

Despite his victory in the floor exercise and vault as well as finishing second in the pommel horse, Cody was individual overall runner-up after a lacklustre display in the high bar.

Jhony admitted that Cody was not very well prepared for the high bar routine.

"He (Cody) did focus on the high bar because he had to concentrate on the parallel bars in the inter-house school meet held earlier. The elements for the high bar was not very demanding but he was not as impressive in his swing," Jhony added.

The three other gymnasts in the Petaling Perdana side were Faris Cross, Joshua Yeong and Reese Anthony Chan.

Reese came in as a late replacement for Jeremy Lee.

"The three of them — Faris, Joshua and Reese — are training under the school programme for only once a week.

"They have the potential and definitely will improve with proper guidance. We are taking on the challenge to form a more formidable boys' team for next season," said Jhony.
