Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:01 AM PDT THE Federal Territories People's Progressive Party (PPP) will be writing in officially to the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister, requesting that the party be given a seat on the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Advisory Board. FT PPP chief Datuk A. Chandrakumanan said currently, increasing the number of members on the City Hall board required changing rules and regulations, which meant going through amendments in Parliament. "But the BN leadership can give us one seat in the spirit of BN power-sharing," said Chandrakumanan. "All we are asking for is fair representation," added Chandrakumanan, who is also the Bandar Tun Razak PPP head. Chandrakumanan said PPP had never been given any representation on any government board, but had nevertheless worked continuously with the people of Kuala Lumpur at grassroots level, engaging with residents to resolve issues in their neighbourhoods. "We are doing a good job and we can do better if we are sitting on the DBKL board since there will be better communication between the residents and City Hall officers. "There is no doubt that there is a need for better communication between residents and the local authority," he said. Bukit Bintang PPP head Sathiah Sudakaran said it was about time that a PPP rep were allowed in as the representative would provide a listening ear and take residents' complaints, suggestions and feedback to the board, which is headed by the mayor of Kuala Lumpur and attended by his heads of departments. Some quarters have even suggested that since Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin is active in the Lembah Pantai constituency, it is unnecessary to have a rep from Lembah Pantai sitting on the board. "The Minister lived in Lembah Pantai for 25 years and served the community in many ways and he had even confirmed his intention to contest there; so why should there be another person from Lembah Pantai when the minister is already doing a good job?" said Lembah Pantai PPP member M. Moorthy. "Give us a chance — and we will show you what we can do," Moorthy said. Cheras Umno head Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee also felt that PPP should be given a seat on the board. "Why not, there is nothing wrong," he said, adding that PPP was a hardworking party with a good track record. "The more, the merrier — DBKL can definitely use the extra help," he said. In a StarMetro report published yesterday titled "PPP wants in", PPP is seeking a seat on the City Hall Advisory Board, and they have been lobbying for it for the past 17 years. PPP president Datuk Seri M. Kayveas expressed disappointment over the fact that PPP was always sidelined. "Currently, we have zero representation on any government board, which is not right," said Kayveas. "We have been writing to City Hall since 2003 to consider a PPP representative on the board," he said, adding that PPP had some 48,000 members in the Federal Territory and that the party had been championing the people at the grassroots level for years. The Federal Capital Act 1960 states that the City Hall Advisory Board must have 15 members with one member each from the Federal Territories Ministry, the Finance Ministry, and the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister's Department, and two members nominated by the Selangor state government. The remaining members must be individuals with knowledge on local government issues, or hold a degree in a certain profession, commerce or industry, or have the expertise to represent the needs and interests of their communities. Members must not be holding a full-time job, as they are required to be committed to the tasks given to them. DBKL advisory board members are appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the recommendation of the Prime Minister as stipulated in the Act. Five members whose term expired on Sept 30 will be retained for another year. Datuk Mustapa Kamal Mohd Yusof, Datuk Yahaya Mat Ghani@Abbas, Datuk Sharifah Aminah Syed Ahmad, Datuk Lim Si Pin and Datuk Abdul Latiff Mohd Som will return to the board. Batu MIC division chairman Ramanathan Chinnu, however, will not. Mustapa Kamal, Yahaya, Sharifah Aminah and Lim were political appointees; the first three are from Seputeh Umno, Batu Umno and Lembah Pantai Umno. Lim is from Batu Gerakan. Abdul Latiff comes under the non-governmental organisation quota. |
Owners urged to settle quit rent arrears immediately Posted: 03 Oct 2012 06:01 AM PDT KINRARA assemblyman Teresa Kok is urging the owners of units at Pusat Perniagaan Kinrara, Section 3, Puchong to pay their outstanding quit rent immediately in order to avoid their premises being seized by the Petaling District Land Office. "The new joint management body has raised this problem and called upon a majority of the property owners to settle their quit rent immediately. "The second warning letter dated Sept 24 from the Petaling District Land Office has been sent to the management, urging the owners to pay the total amount of the unsettled quit rent of RM404,717 inclusive of the penalty charge which needs to be paid within 30 days from the date of issuance," said Kok. Kok added that the commercial development's new management body (JMB) was set up two weeks ago and had taken the responsibility to coordinate the matter. Alice Choo from the JMB said the body had received only about RM22,000 from the owners so far. "Majority of the owners have been renting out their units to traders and could not be bothered by the two warning letters issued to the management about the failure to pay the quit rent. "They need to pay soon as failure to do so will cause them their properties and by then, it will be too late to do anything. "To pay the outstanding arrears, the owners can write a cheque to the Selangor state secretary and pass it to the JMB office and we will hand the cheques to the Petaling District Land Office. "This payment method is used as the properties are still in the master title and payment should be made in groups," said Choo. She said that owners who had enquiries could contact her at 012-612 3144 or the JMB secretary at 012-681 2732 or log on to www.kinraratown.com Choo said the JMB was also calling the owners and traders to come together this Saturday for a gotong-royong (clean-up) session in the area from 9am to 12pm. "Breakfast will be served and we advise the participants to bring cleaning equipment for the session," she added. |
