Call for maintenance of tunnel to be improved Posted: 27 Oct 2012 05:02 AM PDT I refer to the article "SMART assurance", in StarMetro on Oct 24. I am one of the daily users of the SMART tunnel and have been very thankful for this impressive piece of construction ever since it was opened in 2007. In fact, I have been fortunate to join the pre-opening tour and briefing of the construction of the tunnel as well as the Kampung Berembang Control Centre last year, which made me even more appreciative of this initiative. However, I find the quality of the southbound lanes deteriorating due to constant damp conditions. Just take a drive through the tunnel and you will experience some drops of water on your windshield. These constant drops make certain parts of the road wet and slippery, thus dangerous. Maintenance should be improved here. On the occasions when the tunnel needs to be closed in order to divert excessive floodwaters, I do have one piece of advice for the operators: improve the announcements on your website and include the expected time of reopening of the tunnel for road users so that motorists can plan ahead. After so many years of operations, there should be enough experience to estimate when the tunnel can be reopened after the cleaning works are completed. Marco Winter |
