A musical journey

MENTION the word "orchestra", and the viola is probably not the first instrument that immediately comes to mind. The viola is often neglected, although an important instrument in the orchestra.

Jasmine Seng and her husband Tan Chin Seng, both founders of Deciso, came to that realisation and decided to ride on that opportunity and they are hosting A Lusting Voyage With Viola.

The event will be held at Deciso Violin Gallery in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, where more than 10 viola masterpieces will be on display throughout the exhibition.

According to Seng, all handmade violas are distinct as each represents its master luthier's own personality and characteristics.

"Violists often face lack of resources in finding a good viola in the local market," she said. "Therefore, we hope to introduce the beauty of viola during the exhibition."

Deciso Violin Gallery has a wide range of violins, violas and cellos that cater to the needs and preferences of each musician, through collecting and working closely with selected master makers of the instruments.

Master makers that are having their beautifully crafted work exhibited includes award-winning Bertrand Yves Delisle, David Ayache, Han Zhao Sheng and Edrio Edrev.

"We are inviting these makers to visit Malaysia for three to four months," said Seng. "We do not see violin, viola or the cello simply as an instrument, it is an art by itself."

To the musicians, a bow is equally important as the instrument. As string instruments like the viola cannot be played without a bow, Deciso is also taking this opportunity to invite French bow-maker Georges Tepho to join the event. Often regarded as one of the top bow-makers, Tepho will showcase his master-crafted bows at the exhibition for the public to admire his work.

Besides staging a viola exhibition, A Lusting Voyage With Viola will also be featuring a violin and viola masterclass along with a viola ensemble.

The masterclass will be a one-on-one session conducted by Lim Soon Lee, the associate principal of String Performance at Singapore's School Of The Arts (SOTA). The fee is RM200 per hour, and interested participants can visit Deciso's Facebook page to check availability as well as booking details.

"Participants will be able to learn the skills and techniques that are used in playing selected pieces during the masterclass," Seng shared.

The audience can look forward to enjoying the violin ensemble where Angela Lou and friends will be giving a rare performance, aside from a special guest performance by Lim. The one-hour ensemble will feature a total of eight music pieces, and the performances will include other instruments such as the oboe, violin and piano.

"There is no age limitation to A Lusting Voyage With Viola," said Seng.
