A healthy hobby for youths

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 02:38 AM PST

KUALA TERENGGANU: The state government aims to capitalise on the strong interest in cycling among youths by organising monthly carnivals to curb the Mat Rempit problem.

Terengganu Youth and Spots committee chairman Rozi Mamat said the carnival would encourage youths to cycle in groups, while adhering to the rules such as wearing a helmet and safety gears.

"We are confident they will be able to leave the life of illegal racing when they start cycling.

"We discovered that most youths like to cycle at night and thus, we will organise the carnivals at night with participation from local leaders as well," he said after launching the Cycling Carnival at Batu Burok here on Thursday night.

He said cycling was a healthy activity and much safer compared to riding motorcycles recklessly.

"The Mat Rempit problem, especially in the state's capital here is very prevalent.

"We have tried the enforcement route but it is now for a new approach," he said adding that, educating and rehabilitating the speed demons was a better way to curb the problem.

Rozi said the target group for such carnival was youths aged between 13 and 20 but he was delighted that adults as well as parents came to take part in the event.

"I feel this activity is very useful to gather the youths to engage in a healthy activity.

"I hope the activity will result in more awareness of the dangers of illegal motorcycle racing as well as to spur an interest in cycling," he said.

Rozi was among more than 600 participants, who took part in the cycling carnival.

The group cycled some 20km.

Parents and teachers role crucial

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 02:38 AM PST

JOHOR BARU: Parents and teachers must work hand in hand and play a pivotal role in helping to develop a child's future.

Johor Unity, Human Resource, Science,Technology, and Innovation Committee chairman M. Asojan said it was important for parents to give the best education to their children from a young age.

"At home, parents should play the main role in educating their children on what is right and wrong and should not rely solely on the teachers at schools.

"With the advance in technology, children are becoming smarter and parents should guide them and not let them be influenced by negative elements," he said.

Asojan said this when he officiated the state level Tunas Permata Perpaduan 1Malaysia on Thursday.

He also said that teachers should be more sensitive to their student's abilities and skills.

"Teachers should understand that each student has different abilities.

"It is important for teachers to know the advantages and disadvantages of their students and the weaker ones should not be left behind," he said.

He added that every parent could afford to send their children to kindergarten as the fee imposed by the department was reasonable.

"Currently, Johor has about 181 Tabika Perpaduan statewide with 4,500 kindergarten students of different races.

"The department has also requested for an additional 10 more such kindergartens to be built in 2012," he said.
