State behind in Internet access levels, says Dr Yee Posted: 10 Nov 2011 04:15 PM PST KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government wants Internet access levels in the state to be at par with peninsula Malaysia and the minister championing the cause will continue to be critical on the matter until the disparity was tackled. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai said broadband penetration in Sabah was currently 33% which was about half of peninsula's figure of 60%. (The figure is calculated by dividing the number of registered broadband users with the number of households in a particular area.) He said Sabah was lagging in broadband penetration compared to the peninsular due to a lack of ICT infrastructure in the state. "If the infrastructure in this part of the world is not taken cared of, something is wrong in the federal policy. "I will be critical of that till they have the same infrastructure in terms of broadband penetration and other ICT facilities as far as Sabah and peninsula Malaysia is concerned," Yee added after launching the state level ICT month here on Wednesday. He said the government was currently moving in the right direction by setting a higher broadband penetration target. Yee said despite the challenges, he remained hopeful that Sabah's broadband penetration could exceed 33% by year end. Full content generated by Get Full RSS. |
