Negri and Terengganu set up first Malaysia Cup final meeting in 90 years

Posted: 22 Oct 2011 03:58 PM PDT

PETALING JAYA: It is a Terengganu-Negri Sembilan final.

Both teams will meet for the first time in a final of the Malaysia Cup in 90 years.

Last night, Terengganu defeated Selangor 2-1 in the return-leg of the semi-finals at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu and advanced 4-1 on aggregate. In Paroi, Negri clinched their ticket after they edged T-Team 2-1 at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium. The Deer advanced 6-3 on aggregate.

It was massive celebrations in Kuala Terengganu and Paroi as the home fans came out in full force to lend moral support. Terengganu are now eager to lay their hands on the coveted Malaysia Cup after 10 long years (2001) while Negri will be trooping out for their third consecutive final at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.

In Kuala Terengganu, Abdul Manaf Mamat killed off Selangor's challenge after scoring an early goal in the 20th minute before Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin rounded up the night with a brilliant half-volley strike from outside the box, which beat Selangor custodian G. Jeevanthan in the 72nd minute. Safiq Rahim scored the consolation goal for Selangor in the 88th minute

It was sheer frustration for the Red Giants as their quest for a 33rd title went up in smoke. Their season will end trophyless. But last night, they gave everything in the match but they simply could not breach the Terengganu defence marshalled by skipper Mazuki Yusof and in-form goalkeeper Mohd Sharbinee Allawee.

Selangor coach P. Maniam fielded all his attacking players – Mohd Fadli Saari, Rudie Ramli, Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal, Safiq Rahim and Mohd Shazwan Fitri – but there was no breakthrough.

It was a balanced first half with Selangor nearly going in front in the 10th minute through Fadli Saari but he was ruled offside. Terengganu then mounted their own attack with Ashaari coming close twice and Joseph Kallang Tie hitting the woodwork.

The home crowd had to wait until the 20th minute for a goal when Abdul Manaf side-stepped two Selangor defenders to score.

The Red Giants nearly equalised in the 25th minute but Terengganu custodian Mohd Sharbinee stopped Shazwan's close range shot.

Ashaari virtually sent Terengganu to the final by scoring the Turtles' second goal in the 72nd minute with a thunderous shot from the edge of the penalty box.

In Paroi, T-Team needed a three-clear goal victory margin to pip Negri to the final.

But all they could manage was a solitary goal through Mohd Fitri Omar in the 72nd minute but the goal failed to inspire the club side as Negri bounced back with two quick kills through Shahurain Abu Samah in the 75th minute and skipper Mohd Shukor Adan from a glancing header in the 85th minute.

There were more woes for T-Team when striker Mohd Haris Safwan Kamal was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

Chong Wei gets chance to turn the tables on Chinese ace

Posted: 22 Oct 2011 06:55 PM PDT

ODENSE: World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei is all pumped up to put China's Chen Long in his place when he takes on the youngster for the second time in a month in the final of the Denmark Open today.

The Malaysian suffered an agonising loss to Chen Long in the Japan Open final last month.

Chong Wei survived a strong assault by Peter-Gade Christensen before prevailing 21-19, 23-21 to check into an impressive 10th final of the year.

The Dane piled on pressure right from the start, staying close on the heels of Chong Wei and he even looked like forcing a decider after taking the lead twice – at 17-14 and 20-17 – in the second game.

But Chong Wei stood firm and refused to cave in.

An excellent dive by Chong Wei to save a deceptive cross court slice from Christensen at 21-21 proved to be the turning point as the Malaysian went on to wrap up the game.

The 29-year-old Chong Wei commended Christensen for pushing him to the limit.

"I've had easy matches against Peter in the past but not today. This is his last Denmark Open and the home crowd was really supporting him and he did well," said Chong Wei.

"I almost cracked under pressure – especially in the second game. I made some terrible mistakes but, fortunately, I managed to hang on." Chen Long, meanwhile, was impressive in overcoming a gritty Sho Sasaki of Japan 21-16, 21-7 in the other semi-final to reach his third straight final.

He had won the previous two finals – in the China Masters and Japan Open.

"Chen Long is looking quite confident after winning two titles in a row and he has done well to enter the final here," said Chong Wei. "I remember the close defeat at the Japan Open and I know what I need to do to beat him this time.

"Chen Long wants to make up for Lin Dan's early exit but I am equally determined to win my second Denmark Open title as well," added Chong Wei, whose first triumph here was in 2005.

The 22-year-old Chen Long, who has been playing well since his shock first round defeat at the World Championships in Wembley in August, said that "I am feeling confident but I do not want to talk too much about my rematch with Chong Wei".

"I am happy with the way I am playing. I am more skilful and confident now. I have nothing to say about my match against Chong Wei. Just wait and see what happens tomorrow (today)," Chen Long said.

PETALING JAYA: The second edition of the Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge (LIMBC) came to a close yesterday with Germany's Karl Platt and Switzerland's Nathalie Schneitter clinching overall victory in the men's elite and women's elite categories respectively.

Platt, of Team Bulls, finished second in yesterday's Stage 5 – a 12-lap cross country 19km criterium – but wins in Stage 2 and Stage 4 allowed him to take home a total of US$16,450, including US$15,000 as the overall winner.

South Africa's world No. 6 Burry Stander, of Team Specialised and who won Stage 5, was second overall, followed by Italy's Johnny Cattaneo of Full-Dyna-mix.

World No. 8 Schneitter, of Colnago Farbe Sudtirol, was un-questionably the queen of Langkawi when she won Stage 5, as well as the earlier Stages 1, 2 and 3.
