Himpun calls for specific anti-apostasy laws

Posted: 22 Oct 2011 05:27 AM PDT

SHAH ALAM: Organisers of Himpun (Himpunan Sejuta Umat) have called for specific anti-apostasy laws to deal with cases of proselytisation of Muslims.

"We feel that the existing laws are not enough to curb apostasy.

"There have been proven cases of proselytisation, but we find it strange that no action has been taken," Himpun chairman Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid told reporters after a rally at Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.

He said Himpun has initiated a 10-point declaration meant to address the issue and hoped to submit the document to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong by next week.

On the turnout of about 5,000 at the rally, Mohd Azmi said the gathering was a "landmark for the unity of Islam".
