Sultan: Mosques to be institution of guidance

Posted: 23 Oct 2011 05:06 PM PDT

PEKAN: State ruler Sultan Ahmad Shah made a call for mosques to be used in a more systematic manner to strengthen unity among Muslims regardless of their political ideology.

He said this at the opening of the RM14.4mil Sultan Ahmad Shah Al-Haj Mosque here.

The Sultan added that mosques are also institutions which can enable Muslims to garner knowledge and obtain guidance.

"The responsibility to make mosques institutions of knowledge and guidance rests with the mosque officials and committee members who have to be dynamic and of calibre," he said.

He added that mosque officials and committee members should have a wide knowledge of Islam and be creative enough to organise lectures, forums and dialogues of a religious nature to consolidate the role of mosques and strengthen the faith of Muslims.

Sultan Ahmad Shah also called on the Islamic religious department to monitor the development of mosques to ensure that they are not misused by individuals or groups bent on poisoning the minds of Muslims.

The opening ceremony was also attended by members of the royal house including Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob. — Bernama.

Another hospital for KK

Posted: 23 Oct 2011 04:09 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: The state capital will be getting another medical centre in about four years with the completion of a RM186mil complex being developed by UMS LInk Holdings, the commercial arm of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

The UMS Link International Precinct (UIP), which will include a 95-room boutique hotel along with the medical centre, will serve as practical training centre for UMS students.

UMS Link chairman Datuk K.Y. Mustafa said the complex being built on a 2ha site at Alamesra, just a stone's throw from the university campus near here, will also have 160 units of fully furnished service apartments.

Due for completion by mid-2015, the complex will also include commercial lots, a six-storey office tower, a mini theatre, an exhibition gallery and an early-childhood centre.

"The decision to develop the UIP is timely as it will enable UMS Link to tap into the growth of Kota Kinabalu's property sector," Mustafa said.

He noted that property values had appreciated steadily by about 7.41% for apartments and condominiums last year and the figure continued to increase to 7.89% in the first quarter of this year.

In addition, the coastal road to Jalan Sulaman has been identified as one of the four development hotspots in Kota Kinabalu, the other three being Likas, Damai and Luyang.

"UMS Link also realises that it is vital for Sabah to further improve its competitiveness by transforming itself into a hub for excellence in education and learning. This can be attained through the proper implementation of a human capital development plan and the provision of required infrastructures for conducive learning and living. The UIP is a project dedicated to achieve this agenda and at the same time fostering the economic growth of Sabah," he said.

UMS board of directors chairman Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Egoh said the project was the most significant venture undertaken by UMS Link so far.

He said it would enhance UMS' ability greatly in providing improved high-class facilities to both local and foreign students studying at the university.

"Upon the completion of UIP, another iconic business will be added to the Kota Kinabalu skyline," he said.

Posted: 23 Oct 2011 05:08 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: In an effort to encourage schools to add more books to their libraries, the organisers of an upcoming Chinese books expo will be distributing RM200 discount vouchers to schools throughout the state.

The event's organising chairman Ho Muh Jke said that the book vouchers would be distributed to 25 Chinese primary schools and eight independent schools, while Southern College would receive a RM500 voucher.

"The initiative is so that schools will have no excuses not to add new books to their libraries. At the same time, we are instilling a reading culture among the younger generation," Ho told reporters at a press conference here.

Ho added that there would be about half a million books available at the first and largest Chinese book expo in the state that is scheduled to be held at KSL City shopping mall from Nov 4 until Nov 13.

He said that readers will be spoilt for choice as the 204 booths from 70 exhibitors will offer books starting from RM2 and at discounted prices of up to 90%.

"Besides featuring local publishers and authors, we will also be bringing in books by authors from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries.

"Visitors can also enjoy book signings, talks and activities," he said, adding that about 200,000 visitors are expected to attend the book fair.

Ho also said that, to encourage people to buy more books, visitors who "Like" the expo's Facebook page are eligible for a 30% discount voucher.

State Tourism and Domestic Trade committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang, who also attended the press conference, said that the expo would attract both domestic and foreign tourists to the state.

"I hope that book fairs like this can be organised in other districts like Kluang, Batu Pahat and Muar so that those staying in rural areas can also have a chance to visit the fair," he said.
