Vandalism at the expense of MBJB

Posted: 12 Oct 2011 11:06 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) spends thousands of ringgit each year to fund maintenance work on public facilities in the city damaged by vandalism.

A significant amount is spent to replace stolen drain covers in residential areas under the council's jurisdiction.

Mayor Burhan Amin said that the most common act of vandalism was stealing drain covers and selling them to scrap metal collectors.

"After replacing the covers, the vandals usually commit such acts again to make quick buck.

"Another target for vandals is public playgrounds situated in residential areas. We also spend lots of money cleaning up trash," he told reporters during a press conference at Taman Merdeka recreational park here recently.

Burhan added that the vandals also caused a nuisance by damaging playground facilities.

"When we receive complaints about damaged facilities such as slides or swings, the council takes immediate action to prevent mishaps.

"If the playground's condition is very bad, with rusty or broken equipment, the council will close down the playground for repair work. Fortunately so far, all the playgrounds are in good condition," he said, adding that there are 231 playgrounds under MBJB's care.

Meanwhile, a check with MBJB's public relations officer Mohd Firdaus Abdul Hamid revealed that, overall, the council spends about RM2mil each year to maintain facilities including bus stops and public amenities.

He added that the efforts included repainting over graffiti, cleaning up stickers and repairing bus stop seats.

Breast cancer awareness campaign in Malacca

Posted: 12 Oct 2011 06:42 PM PDT

MALACCA: Malaccans are invited to join Bayview Hotel Malacca in its effort to create awareness on breast cancer.

All they have to do is to donate a minimum of RM1 which will allow them to place a pink ribbon on the Pink Ribbon Display in the hotel's lobby.

Themed "Early Detection is the Best Protection", the month-long campaign also aims to raise funds for the Malacca Cancer Society (MCS).

Bayview Hotel's general manager Tan Hui Teng said the hotel would distribute information cards on how to conduct self breast examinations to all female guests when they check in.

It is the first time the hotel is hosting the campaign in its lobby.

"We hope that members of the public will lend their helping hands," he said at the launch ceremony for the campaign recently.

Tan said the hotel, in collaboration with MCS, would also be organising a Pink Luncheon on Oct 30 with tickets sold at RM35 per person.

We encourage patrons to come dressed in pink and enjoy an elaborate line-up of local and international delights, he said, adding the luncheon would also feature a talk entitled "Proactive Path to Cancer Awareness" by a doctor.

He said that a Facebook fan page had also been created in conjunction with the event to raise more funds.

Each 'Like' on the page would generate a RM1 donation from the hotel towards MCS until Oct 31, said Tan, adding that people could also call the hotel at 06-283 9888 for any inquiries about the event.

MCS president, A.C. Vohrah said people of both genders should increase their awareness about breast cancer, which is the most common cancer and also the number one cause of cancer deaths among women in Malaysia.

"If detected and treated early, most women can go on to live long, healthy and normal lives," he said.
