Bata goes online to reach out to more customers

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:10 AM PDT

HOUSEHOLD name for shoes in Malaysia, Bata has recently launched its online website to enable shoppers to buy Bata products from home and get it delivered to their doorsteps for free.

"Bata Home allows customers the freedom to buy shoes from anywhere and anytime by simply accessing the website to view, pick and pay for their purchase. The shoes will then be delivered to their doorstep," Bata Malaysia managing director Luciano Bagnobianchi said at the website launch.

He added that this was a step forward in their customer service and provided Bata Malaysia with an opportunity to embark on a business channel using Bata Home.

The website was launched following the success of Bata Home in India and seeing the continuous growth of Internet usage in Malaysia as well as the trend towards online shopping.

According to Bata Emerging Markets East group managing director Marcello Pace, the brand does not have a sales target for the website.

"This is our way of increasing customer service. Currently we hold 11% market share and hope for positive growth every year at about 10%," Pace said.

Bata Shoe Organisation founder's grandson Thomas G. Bata, who was also present at the event, said the website made the shopping experience more interesting.

"Those who go to the website are mostly professionals with no time to go to the store. I would also say the website customers will include city dwellers and even those living outside major cities looking for fashionable footwear," Bata said.

The event also saw the launch of the revamped Bata store in Suria KLCC, where it opened 13 years ago.

"The revamp is meant to give the store a totally new outlook and at the same time raise the profile of the store.

"Not only the layout has changed but also the merchandise mix to offer more consistency and fresh collections to customers," Bagnobianchi said.

He added that currently they carried the brands Power, Weinbrenner, North Star, Comfit, Marie Claire, Bubblegummer, Pata Pata and their Premium Leather Collections as well as international brands Rockport, Hush Puppies, Teva, Nike, Adidas, Puma and more.

"The new concept has changed the perception of customers who realise that our store image has become better and our merchandise more trendy. This is proven by the increase of spending in the store," he said.
