"The funds will also be used for buying new training facilities and educational materials to help the children obtain vocational training and various skills to help them be more independent," she added. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who also attended the event, commended Kiwanis for taking the initiative to help the less fortunate people develop skills. Gebeng fire and rescue station gets a new vehicles for fire fighting Posted: 09 Jul 2011 03:28 AM PDT KUANTAN: The Gebeng fire and rescue station received a new harzadous material (Hazmat) vehicle and three rapid rescue vehicles (RRV). This is line with the state department's continous efforts in providing better and fast service, especially in areas close to the chemical and petrochemical industrial hub. The total coast was RM3mil of which RM2.43mil is for the Hazmat vehicle. Assistant director general (operations) Datuk Saimon Jahid said it was important to equip the station with the right equipment as operations at the chemical and petrochemical industrial hub site involved huge volumes and a variety of chemicals and gas. "There are a lot of hazardous material being used in the industrial site and the equipment such as the Hazmat vehicle is fitted with tools and attires meant to tackle incidents involving chemicals. "The personnel are also trained on how to effectively use the vehicles and tools," he told reportes after presenting the amended manual aids of Gebeng Emergency Mutual Aid (Gema) to 20 of its members here on Tuesday. Also present was state director and Gema chairman Datuk Abdul Wahab Mat Yasin. Saimon assured that the industrial area had sufficient emergency support system not only from the department but also in-house emergency response units formed by Gema members. Abdul Wahab also said certain provisions in the manual aid needed to be amended to further strengthen the cooperation among the state agencies and companies. "One of the amendments is that the companies are now required to inform the fire and rescue department on any type of incident that occurred in their plants. "Previously, they need only form us if the incident reaches critical level. Now, they must inform the department evebn if the incident is minor,'' he added. Earlier, Abdul Wahab said Gema was set up in 2003 and at that time, there were only 10 members. He also said 10 joint exercises or emergency drills had been conducted involving a variety of scenarios and locations, adding that members would take turns to host and conduct the events. Gema secretary Zaili Wahid said there had been no major incidents in Gebeng except for some minor ones which were successfully contained without causing serious damages. He attributed this to the strict and sound safety procedures practised by Gema members who were mainly from multi-national companies. The objective of the volunteer grouping was to promote mutual emergency assistance, carry out joint exercises and establish links with Kuantan District Civil Disasters Committee (KDCDC). Among the members are BASF Petronas Chemical Sdn Bhd, Cryovac (M) Sdn Bhd, ExxonMobil (M) Sdn Bhd, BP Chemicals (M) Sdn Bhd, Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd, Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd, Petronas Gas Bhd, MTBE/Polypropelene (M) Sdn Bhd and Gas Malaysia Sdn Bhd. Posted: 09 Jul 2011 03:26 AM PDT MALACCA: Cuba is a country known for producing high quality cigars. Less-mentioned, is its unique culture that is an amalgamation of African, Spanish and North American influences. For the observant, one would find such elements in its food, music and art. To promote the country, the Cuban Embassy here is giving Malaysians a taste of the unique blend of its culture through Casa Cuba, an exhibition gallery in Bukit Peringgit. The gallery, built in June 2007, is located inside what was a former senior government officer's residence during the British rule. It is one of Malacca's historical sites. The Second Secretary (Political Affairs) at the Cuban Embassy in Malaysia, Nestor Tores said Casa Cuba had an important role in introducing Malaysians to Cuban culture. The gallery showcases various forms of art by Cuban artists, including paintings, lithographs and ceramic works. Tores said the embassy features over 80 works of renowned Cuban artists, including Nelson Dominguez and Belkis Manso. Belkis was a Cuban artist and lithographer whose work was based on the Afro-Cuban religion, combining the myth of Sikan and the traditions of the Abaku which is a man's secret society. The artist committed suicide in September 1999, at the age of 32. Since her death, the Cuban government declared her work a patrimony where none of it was allowed to leave the country. "It is a privilege that her works were allowed to be brought to Malaysia, to be featured in the exhibition," said Tores. The main exhibition hall features many paintings, including portraits of Cuban President Fidel Castro, and pictures of young people playing baseball, one of the popular sports in the republic. Speaking on setting up the gallery in Malacca, Tores the move was based on the state as a well-developed tourist attraction. He hopes that the establishment of Casa Cuba in Melaka will bring more local and foreign visitors to the gallery, and interest them in the republic. Casa Cuba is open on weekdays from 9am to 5pm. – Bernama. Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by USA Best Price. |
