PTA aiming for pupils to give back to community

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 06:49 AM PDT

MALACCA: The St David High School's Parents Teachers Association (PTA) is getting its pupils to adopt a refreshing mindset and a sense of teamwork and the "giving back to community" stance.

Described as the spirit of innovation and enterprise, the pupils are faithfully grounded in time-honoured values like integrity, social responsibility and respect for others in community.

St David's PTA deputy chairperson Josephine Au said the values and pointers imparted would invariably prepare the pupils to stay abreast with the times and thrive in the future.

"Innovation and enterprise is an important life-skill which will better prepare our young to stay relevant.

"We need young people to try new, untested routes without undue fear of failure.

The ability to create and seize new opportunities rather than merely increasing efficiency of conventional methods, will be essential for one's holistic personal growth and development and that of the local community and society at large."

For starters, the PTA had encouraged pupils to embark on fund raiser projects since 1999.

In 2008, the school raised RM100,000 at its 50th anniversary celebrations and reunion dinner.

Later this month, the pupils and their teachers would organise a food and fun carnival where the PTA is confident to raise RM100,000 to furnish four science laboratories.

Recently, about 100 Form Three pupils from the school had volunteered their services to the Malacca Cancer Society.

They also raised a sum of RM3,000 for the local society's coffers.

On a separate matter, St David's PTA is also drawing up plans to re-introduce the school marching band.

Disbanded in the 70s due to the lack of funding, music loving students and their supporters would be requested to validate entrepreneurship to get the band project off the ground with raising of funds to purchase instruments and uniforms.

Local authorities should clear uncollected garbage in their areas

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 06:49 AM PDT

MUAR: Local authorities in the state should undertake any clearing and garbage disposal works which the privatised company did not carry out in their areas.

Local Government, Housing, Arts and Heritage Committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Zahri Jamil said the local councils could apply for allocations to undertake the tasks.

Speaking at the presentation of cheques to three non-governmental organisations (NGOs) here he said what was important was for the towns and housing schemes to be clean and garbage-free.

"The state had privatised the collection and disposal of garbage to a company but not everything the company can do to upkeep cleanliness and beauty of all towns in Johor.

"The state now wants the councils to carry out the task which the company could not do," he said before giving out cheques totalling RM330,000 given by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to the NGOs here.

Ahmad Zahri, who represented Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, said the state was also not happy with matters related with cleanliness in many housing schemes.

He said besides irregular garbage collection, there were also potholes along many roads, especially in housing schemes, and uncut grass along the road fringes.

He said there were also cases where workers used weedkiller to destroy the uncut grass and overgrowth but such a move had been banned by the state several years ago.

He said he had directed the relevant authorities to book those found using weedkiller to kill off the grass as the poisonous chemical would contaminate the drains and creeks.

On the allocations by the premier, Ahmad Zahri said they were promised by Najib when he met with the NGO leaders here during his visit to Muar in March.

He said the allocations were for the Muar Market Traders Association which received RM200,000, RM100,000 to the Muar Taxi Owners Association another RM30,000 for developments in Kampung Sri Jong.

"The cheques are direct grants for these NGOs to organise activities for their members and to generate economic growth to help their members," he added.
