Shaheizy Sam is probably the most wanted actor in town after winning the Most Popular Artiste and Most Popular Actor awards at the annual Anugerah Bintang Popular (ABP) awards two months ago.

The highly personable actor, who received more than 120,000 votes to clinch the top ABP prize, is also very much in demand.

Shaheizy, better known as Sam, did a brilliant job in Kongsi, the action movie that grossed RM8.1million at the box-office recently. Sam who played a Thai gangster named Tumulak was a hit with his fans. Many started to speak to him in Kelantanese (dialect) after the movie was screened.

"I found it both funny and strange when forced to converse with my fans in Kelantanese-Thai (dialect). But it's all fun because they have grown to love my Tumulak character," said Sam who was coached by Fizo Omar, a Kelantan-born actor.

"I love Tumulak because it brought the hidden comic side of me. It's almost like a fictional character in a way where I had to use a lot of my imagination," he said.

Sam is popular for many reasons. One is because he has no airs about him, second he is approachable. The lad, who is known for his offbeat characters in several TV dramas and movies, is hardly one to be surrounded by PR managers. He is upfront when it comes to interviews and takes the hard questions in his stride.

Some have likened his acting to Johnny Depp. Try asking Sam this and he would probably tell you, he is nothing close to the Hollywood actor though deep down, he is very much flattered.

As the first winner of the Special Yasmin Ahmad award at Anugerah Skrin 2010, he does deserve to indulge his ego. But he doesn't.

"I am no Johnny Depp because acting-wise, I am nowhere near him," said Sam, who is the younger brother of actress Zizie Izzette.

"I'm sure they made the comparison because of the image I portray on screen ... like wearing similar hats, spotting the same hair length or having the same frame of glasses. But frankly, that is where the similarity ends."

The rising star who won the Best Male Supporting Role at the 23rd Malaysian Film Festival in 2009 is a bit worried about the expectations pinned on him.

"Though I have learned to cope with all the publicity, I'm still nervous when people expect me to work wonders in every drama or movie."

Undoubtedly, he has come a long way since his first role in the TV drama Pa'e in 1995.

The 28-year-old actor now aims to produce his first movie under the family-owned production house 2121 Vision Pictures, if everything goes as planned. Work is set to start in November for this project.

"The script is almost ready and we have a few directors in mind. And I'll probably act in this movie," said Sam who gave notable portrayals in movies like Jangan Pandang Belakang Congkak, Adnan Sempit and Bohsia, Jangan Pilih Jalan Hitam.

As an actor, Sam's appeal is somewhat different. He doesn't tackle his roles like most Malaysian actors do. His acting is more intense with lots of emotional shades. It's probably because he comes from a family of actors.

"I have this habit of shutting myself off from the real world after I get a new script. I like to be alone to get in the right mood," said the son of veteran actress Kathy Fudziah.

He visualises his roles in some detail.

"The first thing I do when preparing for a role is to lock myself in a room. I will read the script and comb each line until I am satisfied. After I get a vivid image of the role, I will discuss it with the director or with the cast members," said the self-confessed loner.

As he looks at his daily planner, Sam mentions that he is simply loving the hectic career schedule. He just finished shooting for Nongkrong, the sequel of Nangkung (MIG Productions) while the movie Sam (Skop Production) is also done.

The latter is a film where he plays a character who has a split personality.
