Survivors tell of terrifying moments during landslide Posted: 21 May 2011 09:53 AM PDT KAJANG: "I shouted to others to run and in a split second the earth came tumbling down, burying many of my friends," said Mohd Iman Abdullah. The 14-year-old boy was among the occupants of an orphanage, the "Rumah Anak-anak Yatim dan Anak-anak alHidayah Madrasah Al-Taqwa", in Kampung Gahal, Hulu Langat, who managed to escape in the incident which buried alive 25 people. "All of us were under a canopy to prepare for an event, and I saw the earth moved and then collapsed," he added. Another student, Mohd Jihad Jalal, 14, said the situation became panicky and there were shouts for help. "I was buried too, up to the legs, but a villager pulled me out," he added. Mohd Faizal Isni, 17, said before the landslide occurred, he heard noises like snapping of the tree branches. "At that time we were finishing the stage to welcome the arrival of Finas (National Film Development Board) officials, scheduled at 5pm," he added. Meanwhile, a local resident, who was among the earliest to arrive at the scene, said he was at he location of the landslide about 10 minutes after it happened and heard shouts for help. But, everything fell silent about half an hour later, he added. He said he saw a boy trapped in the rubble, but failed to help him. The warden of the orphanage, Mohd Hambali Ismail, 34, said the incident occurred after the students had their lunch and some of them were cleaning the dining hall. "I was at the hostel then and heard a loud noise and saw many students buried alive," he said, adding that there had been several incidents of minor landslides in an area about 50 metres away from the orphanage building. Landslide: Search to continue despite darkness and rain, says DIGP Posted: 21 May 2011 08:37 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The search and rescue operation will continue until all victims buried under the landslide at Rumah Anak-anak Yatim Hidayah in Hulu Langat are recovered, said Deputy IGP Datuk Seri Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar. He said the operation involved 200 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department, Special Search and Rescue Team Malaysia (Smart), Civil Defence Department and the police. "The search and rescue operation will continue until all victims are found despite the darkness and rain," he said. Ismail urged the public to stay away from the area so as not to disturb rescuers in their work. "So far, I understand there is still earth movement because of the rain. As such, I urge members of the public living nearby and wishing to see the situation, to stay away from the site of the tragedy. "We fear that other undesired incidents may occur," he said. On the status of the orphanage, Ismail said that at the moment the police wanted to concentrate on the rescue operations first while the status of the orphanage would be investigated later. - Bernama Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by USA Best Price. |
PAS elections committee apologises for omitting candidates Posted: 21 May 2011 06:18 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The PAS central elections committee has apologised for its "inadvertent technical mistake" in omitting five names from the list of candidates eligible to contest posts in the party's central committee next month. Its chairman, Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman, said a review revealed that the list of candidates issued on May 17 did not contain the names of Kuala Selangor MP Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yaakob, Keningau PAS division head Hishamuddin Sulaiman, PAS Youth central executive committee member Kamal Ashaari and Pasir Puteh MP Muhammad Husin. "I, as the representative of the elections committee, apologise for the inadvertent technical mistake," he told a news conference Saturday. Abdul Halim said the mistake had been rectified and the five candidates had been informed of their eligibility to contest in the elections to be held at the PAS general assembly from June 3 to 5. Earlier, it was felt that only the name of Dr Dzulkefly, a PAS central committee member, had been omitted from the list of 82 names of the eligible candidates, he said. However, after a thorough review, the committee found that four other names had also been left out, he added. "With the correction, the number of people eligible to contest posts in the PAS Central Committee for 2011/2013 is 87," he said. Abdul Halim said a review was also made of the candidates eligible to contest in the PAS Youth executive committee and Dewan Ulama executive committee. "As for PAS Youth, there were 68 names but only 63 are eligible to contest as the other five have exceeded the age limit of 40. "For the Dewan Ulama, there are only 24 candidates as two names from the original list of 26 were inserted twice with different spelling," he said. Abdul Halim said all the eligible candidates had until May 26 to state their agreement to contest or otherwise. - Bernama. Full Feed Generated by Get Full RSS, sponsored by USA Best Price. |
