Local selection steal a march over fancied Australians

Posted: 20 May 2011 07:53 PM PDT

MALACCA : Compared to Malaysia, the Australian cricket accomplishments and standard at all levels of play are world class.

However, a Malacca Bandar Hilir Primary School (MBHPS) selection did the country proud when the Singapore based Australia International School (AIS) made a three-match goodwill playing tour here recently.

Fielding under-10 year old players, both sides featured in two 30-over and a 20-over matche. Exciting cricket and high scores prevailed throughout the matches played at the Bandar Hilir Green with MBHPS coming out with three splendid wins against their more fancied opponents.

In the first match played over a 20-over format, the visitors were put in to bat first after host skipper Ammar Aiman opted to field afterwinning the toss.

The visitors scored 69 runs all out in 20 overs. Ned Cusack top scored with 18 runs with Monti Buck and Ishaan Murkherjee chipping in with 14 runs each.

For the locals, Shaun Yue took the shine when he bagged two wickets for 20 runs. In reply, the home side reached 70 runs for the loss of 8 wickets over a 16-over spell to win the match narrowly by two wickets.

In the second match of 30 overs, the home side batting first registered a score of 184 runs for nine wickets over 24.3 overs.

Hakkim Jaafar top scored with 33 runs while Mohammad Aidiel, Nik Amri, Ammar Aiman and Muhammad Yusri posted identical scores of 16 runs.

For the Aussies, Ned Cusack and Gus Dempsey each captured two wickets.

Getting on the batting crease, the visitors replied with 180 for the loss of nine wickets in 27 overs to bow out by a mere four runs.

Ishaah Mukherjee was the star when he scored 33 runs, with three sixes and three fours. Monti Buck and Ned Cusack also assisted in the Aussie total with 31 and 21 runs respectively.

In the final match, the home side batting first amassed 216 for six wickets inside 30 overs. Both Hakkim Jaafar and Ikmal Shafee were in sparkling form, hitting 33 runs each. Ammar Aiman and Fariz Mohd Nor were also in their element, posting 22 runs each.

The Aussies in reply reached 182 for five wickets in 30 overs. Jaspar Buck hit a breezy 28 runs not out while Ned Cusack, Jackson Grant Cook and Monti Buck scored 25,20 (not out) and 16 runs respectively. Ammar Aiman was the best among the local bowlers taking two wickets for 23 runs.

BHPS cricket master Khoo Chai Huat, a former state stalwart and current international umpire, said the local lads matched their opponents stride for stride in all department of the game.

"They turned in a commendable performance to steal the show against their fancied opponents" he added.

Home team manager Mohd Noor Hafiz paid tribute to the visitors saying they too played up to expectations.

"The young Aussies in all three matches fought gallantly to close score gaps in their outings and almost won the opening two matches. Their skills and reading of the game were astute," he added.

Narender Reddy, the AIS coach and team co-ordinator saidboth sides were evenly balanced and the match could have swung either way.

"Overall, the local youngsters impressed with good batting skills and fine all round fielding. Their display augers well for the local state level cricket development aspects," he said.
