Fruitful tie: Prince and Warner Bros.

Posted: 01 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT

After years of releasing his music independently in unconventional ways, Prince has returned to Warner Bros. Records, the label that issued most of his biggest hit singles and albums from the late 1970s into the 1990s, and which is set to put out the artiste's new studio album at an unspecified date.

"A brand-new studio album is on the way," Prince said in a statement recently, "and both Warner Bros Records and Eye are quite pleased with the results of the negotiations and look forward to a fruitful working relationship."

His use of "Eye" is a playful allusion to his latest project, a stripped-down ensemble called 3rdEyeGirl. Prince recently announced his next album would feature 3rdEyeGirl and be called Plectrumelectrum, but the recent announcement didn't specify if that would be the new studio album to which he alluded.

The new contract, announced by Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Cameron Strang, coincides with this year's 30th anniversary reissue of his 1984 blockbuster album and film, Purple Rain. A deluxe remastered reissue of the album is planned.

Release dates have not been announced for either album, and financial terms of the contract were not revealed.

The announcement also suggested other "long-awaited, previously unreleased material" will be surfacing as a result of the deal, which gives Prince ownership of the master recordings to his biggest hits.

Strang said in the same statement: "Everyone at Warner Bros Records is delighted to be working with Prince once again: he is one of the world's biggest stars and a truly unique talent." – Los Angeles Times/McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

Return of a legend

Posted: 01 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT

IT HAS been pretty much a decade or so since US DJ/producer Sandy Rivera last visited our shores and May 10 will see him grace the decks in Kuala Lumpur once more as Maibar at Aloft Sentral, KL Sentral, will host the now legendary man behind the Kings of Tomorrow on May 10.

Whichever way you look at it, you know who Sandy Rivera is. Whether it is the words to Finally, the album you have by Kings of Tomorrow, the stunning production that infiltrates all the way through Freak or the untold mixes that have penetrated the dance charts over the past 15 years; you know who Sandy Rivera is.

Rewind a decade-and-a-half, back to the days when dance music was underground, music was made purely from love and the future king of tomorrow was launching a label called Blackwiz. Take it back to a time when something amazing happened, a New Yorker with Puerto Rican heritage started making records.

Following a short run making hip-hop tracks and learning the piano to gain a higher level of musical understanding, Sandy dropped his first LP in 1997. Labeled The Calling and featuring the man himself on vocals, it set dance floors on fire and brought with it confirmation that something very special had arrived.

Sandy's second album, It's In The Lifestyle, came out under the Kings of Tomorrow guise and featured soon-to-be classic, 'dance music at its best' offerings including the iconic Finally with vocals from Julie McKnight and the brilliant bassline-infused Young Hearts.

2005 witnessed Sandy's third album Trouble, still under the Kings of Tomorrow alias. Each track an affirmation of Sandy's musical range, cleverly crossing over genres while mixing house, soul, R&B and chill-out.

That album had one of the most significant musical links to Malaysia as it featured significant collaborations from our very own Haze, including the worldwide club anthems Changes, Dreams, Thru and album track Sometimes.

Along with the new side of Rivera came the indication that the next set of releases — be they under KOT, Awesome Foursome, Sanjay, Mysterious People or The Committee — would have a universal sound appeal, push the edges of innovation and transcend the genre of pure house.

Since the release of Trouble, Sandy has released various compilations — including Ministry Of Sound Sessions & Kings Of Tomorrow Defected ITH — and has a magnitude of production credits on tracks and mixes including Craig David, Moby, Fedde Le Grand and Everything But The Girl.

In the last few years, Sandy has maintained an intimidatingly impressive production catalogue, with many finding their home on Defected Records. Freak (again featuring Haze), Hide U and Can't Stop came as Sandy Rivera, while he reverted to his Kings of Tomorrow moniker for Take Me Back and I Need to Love Me, both of which were hailed as a return to the heyday of vocal house music.

The KL appearance will take place at Maibar, one of the latest additions to the very exclusive circle of bars-with-a-view-and-a-swimming-pool in Kuala Lumpur up in the stratosphere of high-rise buildings.

The night's main support will come from veteran Malaysian DJ Q.
