Cheroh landfill to close and new 20ha site identified

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 04:49 PM PST

RAUB: The landfill in Cheroh near here will be closed down by the end of next year, Housing and Local Governent Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung said.

Chor said the landfill which had served residents in the district for many years was nearing its capacity.

"Garbage up to some 45 metric tonnes are being dumped into the site every day.

"Presently, work is being carried out to cover up the site and minimise the foul stench from affecting nearby residents," he said after presenting free rubbish bins to residents here.

Also present were Tourism Minister and Raub MP Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen and Pahang state executive councillor Datuk Hoh Khai Mun.

Chor said the district council had identified a new 20ha site to build a new landfill.

He said all the necessary preparations including technical studies such as environment impact assessment were being done.

"We hope the new landfill will be ready on time when the old site cease operations.

"The authorities have been told to monitor the development closely including the possible impact on the environment and air quality," he said.

Chor said in addition, solid waste concessionaire Alam Flora had also been instructed to keep tabs on the dumping process by its garbage trucks and look for ways to reduce foul stench.

He said a new garbage separation area would be set up in the new site costing about RM3.5mil to sort out items which could be recycled.

"We hope the public can play a role to recycle their garbage and reduce households waste as opening up new landfills is not a viable solution," he said.

Posted: 07 Feb 2013 02:51 PM PST

KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) has extended the city's parking fee penalty period to Feb 28 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

The parking amnesty programme announced by DBKK early this year was supposed to have ended on Jan 31 but has been extended due to requests from the public.

DBKK Holding Sdn Bhd executive director Kenny Chan said the extension was also City Hall's appreciation to the public and to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the city on Feb 2.

"Motorists have appealed for the extension of the programme due to financial constraints especially after celebrating Christmas, New Year, the new school term and now the Chinese New Year," he said.

The people need not have pay the parking penalties for late payment but only pay the actual parking fees charged.

Several parking counters around the city have been opened from 8.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and from 8.30am to 12.30pm on weekends.

For more information, the public can contact the parking management at 088-270181/270182.
